Regular Season Round 28: Moncton M. - Halifax R. 105-97

Date: January 26, 2014
Oludamilola Sapara prides himself on being an unwaveringly positive, optimistic guy. But the Halifax Rainmen guard’s resolve was tested after his team’s uninspiring performance that led to a 105-97 loss to the Moncton Miracles before 1,340 fans at the Metro Centre on Sunday. “It’s tough; I try to stay as positive as possible… I learned that from my upbringing,” said Sapara. “I try to bring that mentality to the team. Nights like this we can’t have.” From the get go, the Rainmen looked like a sluggish group that was out of sorts. The Miracles were only too happy to take advantage, outscoring Halifax in three out of four quarters, handing the home squad its second straight loss. “We dug a hole to deep that we couldn’t fight back from,” added Sapara. “We have to learn from this but as we get closer and closer to the playoffs we can’t continue to make these mental mistakes. We can’t win a game, let alone a playoff series with that many mistakes.” Dead last in the NBL standing with a record of 6-23, the Rainmen’s two straight wins last weekend seemed all but a distant memory now. On Sunday, the home team fell back into its old habits of falling behind early, struggling to execute plays at both ends of the court and coming up short in a late comeback attempt. This time, going into the fourth quarter down seven points, the Rainmen couldn’t get it done. Rainmen point guard Chayne Gadson made his return to the lineup after missing more than three weeks with an injury. He looked rusty, picking up a season low four points to go with three assists in 28 minutes of action. But, one of Halifax’s bright lights was Raven Barber, who finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds, but failed to inspire a sustained push from his supporting cast. He didn’t mince words in his assessment of his team’s performance. “We need more heart, that’s the main thing,” said Barber. “We need to work on our defence… a lot.” Miracles guard Johnny Mayhane collected a game-high 23 points, while Olumuyiwa Famutimi paced the Rainmen with 22 points.
