Regular Season Round 29: Mississauga P. - Brampton A's 96-129
Date: January 27, 2014
The Brampton A’s bounced back from a Sunday afternoon loss to defeat the Mississauga Power 129-96 on Monday night at the Powerade Centre in a National Basketball League of Canada contest. On Sunday the A’s fell 114-108 to London before a record NBL attendance of more than 7,000 in London, in a game that was tied with just over a minute remaining. Brampton coach David Magley felt the team played well in London. They returned home on Monday night to only a few hundred fans but put on a dominant performance. Brampton led 41-19 after the first quarter and increased the margin to 71-37 at the half. With a 104-64 lead going into the fourth quarter, Magley did some experimenting even playing some zone defense and the coach said they may not do much more of it after Mississauga scored 33 points. “The focus was to just try to win every quarter,’’ said Magley after the team had built the early lead. After shooting better than 55 per cent from the field in the first half, the A’s finished shooting exactly 50 per cent. Brampton had 26 assists and committed just 13 turnovers. Nine players scored in double figures for Brampton led by Cavell Johnson with 20 points. Melvin Council had 19, Flenard Whitfield added 18, Scotie Haralson 13, Jesse Tipping, Cedric Moodie and Kevin Francis 12 apiece,, Brent Jennings 11 and Evaldas Zabas 10. Moodie had 11 rebounds. Mississauga got 23 points from Morgan Lewis. Kirk Williams Jr. added 20 while Thijin Moses scored 14. Alex Johnson and Eric Petty Jr. counted 12 each. The Power which slipped to 8-24, shot just over 42 per cent for the game. In Sunday’s game Moodie had his second triple/double of the season with 11 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. Johnson led the scoring with 27 points. Jordan Hamilton tossed in 17 points, hitting five-of-nine three-points shots. Council managed 16 points. Zabas had 14 and Whitfield 10. Magley said the A’s did the things they wanted to do against London but turnovers proved costly. Brampton placed Jameson Tipping on the injury list on Monday with a sprained ankle. The team signed guard Jasper Williams from Washington D.C. He made his debut on Monday, playing 17 minutes, scoring two points and getting two rebounds. Brampton’s home game with Windsor on Saturday was cancelled as white out conditions on the 401 prevented the Express from getting to Brampton. The A’s and Power have a re-match on Thursday morning, an 11 a.m. start at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga. The original 7 p.m. starting time this has been changed to a School Day game in Mississauga and the Power is expecting a big crowd. Courtesy of: mississauga.com
