Regular Season Round 29: London L. - Ottawa S. 104-107
Date: January 27, 2014
The Ottawa SkyHawks say they want to bring the game to the fans. They did just that Monday evening, playing in front of about 300 enthusiastic fans in the first of two Monday games at Cégep de l’Outaouais, a French language college just a snowball’s throw away from beautiful Gatineau Park. They also took their game to the London Lightning, edging them 107-104. The Lightning missed a three-point buzzer beater in an attempt to tie the game. It was the second win for Ottawa (15-15) in 6 days over London (20-11). In the first half, Ottawa appeared to catch the Lightning, who arrived in Ottawa at 3am after an eight hour bus ride, napping. The SkyHawks scored basket after basket with London playing catch-up throughout both quarters. London did however, manage to stay close all half — though not once taking a lead, Ottawa led by four points (24-20) after the first frame and 52-48 going into the intermission. The Lightning, however, came out gunning in the 3rd quarter. London took their first lead with an 8-2 run to start the second half. The Lightning outscoring the SkyHawks 29-23 in the frame, and led 77-75 after three. It could have been more. Eric Frederick, London’s 6’8" centre, lost track as the clock ran down and missed adding two more ‘easy’ points to the Lightning lead when his breakaway slam-dunk left his hands a split-second after the buzzer. The SkyHawks spread the scoring around. Seven shooters scored double digits, with Jerice Crouch sinking 18. London’s Tony Bennett paced all shooters with 20 points. Ottawa will return to the Cégep in Gatineau again on Feb. 24 when they will host the league leading Windsor Express. The SkyHawks’ hit the road for two games, before returning to host the Saint John Mill Rats next Wednesday (February 5) at Canadian Tire Centre. Courtesy of: metronews.ca
