Regular Season Round 56: Idaho S. - Santa Cruz W. 99-95

Date: January 29, 2014
For the Santa Cruz Warriors, it wasn't nearly as gut-wrenching as the last time they visited Idaho. But the final outcome was exactly the same. Playing at CenturyLink Arena in Boise, Idaho hasn't been kind to the Warriors, and Wednesday's tilt with the host Stampede continued that trend as Santa Cruz squandered an eight-point lead in the fourth quarter en route to a 99-95 loss. Dominic McGuire led the Warriors with 20 points on 9 of 14 shooting to go along with a team-high 12 rebounds, while Daniel Nwaelele added 16 points. Ognjen Kuzmic and Scott Machado each added 12 points for the Warriors (15-10), who remain in first place in a tight West Division at the midway point of the regular season. Dee Bost had a game-high 24 points on 10 of 11 shooting for the Stampede (14-11), who are in fourth place in the West but trail Santa Cruz by a full game in the standings. Los Angeles (14-10) and Reno (15-11) are each a half-game back of first place. The loss completes Santa Cruz's three-game road trip with a 2-1 record. The Warriors will return home to Kaiser Permanente Arena on Friday when they host the Reno Bighorns at 7 p.m. Santa Cruz hasn't played well enough to win in Boise this season. The last time the Warriors were at CenturyLink Arena on Jan. 18, the team squandered a nine-point lead in the fourth quarter and lost in devastating fashion in overtime. The Warriors had possession of the ball and controlled a 118-117 lead with 3.7 seconds remaining in the extra period, but turned the ball over on an in-bounds pass and ultimately lost the game when Reggie Hearn scored the winning basket with seven tenths of a second left. It continued a bit of a trend the team has had in Idaho. The two teams have played to their home crowd, in fact. Dating back to last season, the Warriors are 4-1 against Idaho while playing at Kaiser Permanente Arena in Santa Cruz but are 1-5 against the Stampede on the road. The last time Santa Cruz defeated Idaho in Boise was Dec. 15, 2012. Wednesday's game appeared it might be heading toward the win column for the Warriors, who built an eight-point lead early in the fourth quarter after Mychel Thompson knocked down a pair of free throws. At 75-67, it was the largest lead of the game for Santa Cruz. But Idaho went on a 13-5 run to knot the game at 80. The two teams then traded baskets before the Stampede went on a 9-0 run to build a 94-88 lead with 2:13 to go. They never trailed again. Santa Cruz held an 88-85 lead with 4:39 remaining, but it went 3 of 10 from the field with two turnovers down the stretch. Still, the Warriors had the ball trailing 95-93 with 23.6 seconds remaining. But Hilton Armstrong missed a short-range jumper in the paint with 12 seconds to go and, although Machado pulled down the offensive rebound, he turned the ball over and the team was forced to foul. Idaho was 9 of 10 from the free-throw line down the stretch. Armstrong had nine points and 11 rebounds for the Warriors, while Seth Curry had 10 points and a team-high four assists. Kevin Murphy had 23 points for Idaho, while Pierre Jackson added 22. Santa Cruz outrebounded Idaho 48-40, including 15-5 on the offensive glass. But the Stampede shot 48 percent from the field (Santa Cruz shot 40 percent), and made 12 of 23 from behind the arc. Courtesy of: santacruzsentinel.com
