Regular Season Round 30: Brampton A's - Mississauga P. 102-118

Date: January 30, 2014
The Mississauga Power know how the National Basketball League of Canada standings will look when the playoffs begin. With seven games left in the regular season, they're guaranteed to finish last in the five-team Central Division and will face the fourth-place team in a wildcard contest to see who makes it into the playoffs. However, they're hoping to set the stage for an upset — and this afternoon's 118-102 win over the Brampton A's was a good start. It was Mississauga's first win in seven games against the powerful A's and an indication of what the team is capable of, according to Power guard Morgan Lewis. "I think everyone knows, just by looking at our team on paper, we have some talented players, but not necessarily a good team yet," said Lewis, who led all scorers with 37 points. "(Coach David Joseph) has us practicing three-and-a-half hours a day now, and today, it just came down to our mental focus. We were all on the same page for once and I think if we can consistently play at that level, we can upset some teams and make a playoff run." The game was Mississauga's inaugural School Day match with hundreds of students from Peel and the surrounding area in attendance. The Power improved to 9-24 while the A's fell to 20-10. Brampton sits second in the Central Division behind the Windsor Express. Mississauga's Kirk Williams Jr. finished with 24 points while Dwight McCombs chipped in with 17. Flenard Whitfield led the A's with 18. The teams were neck and neck going into the fourth quarter until the Power outscored their opponents 37-23 in the final stretch. "We know they're probably the best perimeter-shooting team in the league and the numbers show that, but tonight, we did a good job of shutting down their perimeter players," Lewis said. "Dwight (McCombs) did a great job containing them in the post and from there it was just defence. We have an athletic team and for the first time this season, I think we played four quarters of defence." The Power built up big leads in the second and third quarters, only to have the A's claw their way back. Williams Jr. sparked the Power with a pair of dunks in the second quarter to give his team a 10-point lead before Brampton trimmed the deficit to four at halftime. In the third, the teams were tied at 58 before Lewis finished an alley-oop and sank a three-pointer in a 9-0 run. Mississauga out-rebounded Brampton 54-42 and turned the ball over 14 times compared to Brampton's 22. The teams will meet one more time in the season finale on Feb. 27 at the Hershey Centre. The Power will travel east to face the Saint John Mill Rats next Thursday while the A's will host the Mill Rats at the Powerade Centre the following night. Courtesy of: mississauga.com
