Regular Season Round 59: Santa Cruz W. - Bakersfield J. 110-105
Date: February 1, 2014
Kent Bazemore said he was given the option of playing in a team poker tournament with his Golden State teammates on Saturday night, or playing in a basketball game with his Santa Cruz teammates. He chose the latter, much to the D-League team's delight. “I don't know much about poker; I'm not a gambling guy,” Bazemore said. “But anytime you can get out and run up and down the floor, get your legs under you, and play in front of a great crowd, you can't beat that.” Bazemore's decision ultimately benefitted Santa Cruz, which needed every one of his game-high 25 points — including 13 in the fourth quarter — to stave off a downright annoying Bakersfield Jam team that wouldn't go away. The Warriors won the game, 115-105. Bazemore, who was assigned to Santa Cruz earlier in the day along with Golden State teammate MarShon Brooks, had three assists and three steals to pace the Warriors (16-11). He started a little slow, registering six points in the first half on 1 of 5 shooting, but found his stroke late to keep Santa Cruz ahead. “It was kind of frustrating early on for me. My body wasn't used to going up and down,” said Bazemore, who has posted averages of 2.3 points and 1.0 rebounds in 40 games with Golden State this season. “But I just stayed with the course,” he added. “I knew once I got my legs under me, things would turn around.” His 13 fourth-quarter points came on 2 of 5 shooting from behind the arc and 7 of 8 from the free-throw line. The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for the Warriors. “I've worked really hard all season to prepare for moments like this, especially for Golden State,” said Bazemore, who appeared in five games last season with the D-League Warriors. “But when your name is called and you've got to come down to Santa Cruz, you've got to perform as well. So things worked out for me in the end.” Seth Curry added 22 points and five assists and Dominic McGuire provided a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Cameron Jones had 13 points off the bench for Santa Cruz, while Daniel Nwaelele provided 11 behind three 3-pointers. Courtesy of: santacruzsentinel.com
