Regular Season Round 97: Golden St.W. - Charlotte B. 75-91

Date: February 4, 2014
The Charlotte Bobcats completed a 3-1 West Coast trip Tuesday with an impressive 91-75 victory over the Golden State Warriors. The Bobcats swept the Warriors in this season series, after winning their home game against Golden State in December. The Bobcats played exceptional defense Tuesday, holding the Warriors to 57 points over the first three quarters and building a lead of as much as 22. The Bobcats (22-28) got 30 points and 13 rebounds from center Al Jefferson. Point guard Kemba Walker returned to the lineup after missing a little over two weeks with a sprained left ankle. Walker finished with seven points, seven assists and six rebounds. The Bobcats won games against the Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Lakers on this trip, losing only to the Phoenix Suns. The Warriors’ 31 percent from the field was a season-low. Charlottean Stephen Curry finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Warriors (29-20). The Bobcats led by as much as 18 in the third quarter. Warriors reserve forward Marreese Speights hit a wild 3 at the end of the quarter to trim the Bobcats’ lead to 72-57. Jefferson scored 11 points in the third quarter, which Walker went scoreless. The Bobcats had one of their best halves of this season, holding the Warriors to 33 percent shooting from the field, to lead 51-39 at halftime. The challenge in guarding the Warriors is containing Curry without letting the ripple effect bury you from other shooters. Curry had eight first-half points and six assists. The only other Warrior who had much success offensively was Harrison Barnes, who scored eight points off four shots from the field. The Bobcats led in the first half by as much as 17 points. Well as they played defense – Golden State was 16-of-49 from the field – they were sloppy in protecting the boards. The Warriors had 13 offensive rebounds in the first half, but didn’t do much with those extra opportunities, scoring five second-chance points. Walker played his first game since spraining his left ankle Jan. 14 against the Miami Heat. Walker missed seven games. The Bobcats went 4-3 in that span, but it was clear in Saturday’s loss in Phoenix that the scoring burden Jefferson took on in Walker’s absence was wearing him down. Jefferson broke a string of 11 games scoring 20 or more points against the Suns, finishing with 10 points. Walker had hoped to return against the Lakers Friday, but felt serious pain in his ankle at shoot around and pushed his return back to Tuesday. Walker didn’t look limited by the injury. Normally a shoot-first point guard, he was more a facilitator in the first half, finishing with four points, six rebounds and five assists. Walker’s return allowed coach Steve Clifford to go back to playing Walker and Ramon Sessions together. That improves the Bobcats’ quickness and ball handling. Jefferson was the only player for either team to reach double figures scoring in the first half. He had 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting, plus five rebounds. The Bobcats don’t play again until Saturday, at home against the San Antonio Spurs. They play one game in six days and three games in the next 13 (due in part to the All-Star break).
