Regular Season Round 64: Tulsa 66ers - Delaware 87ers 106-104
Date: February 7, 2014
Mustafa Shakur scored 29 points Fright night as the Tulsa 66ers held tight for a 106-104 victory over Delaware in the NBA Development at the SpiritBank Event Center. After Shakur made the 1 of 2 free throws with 9 seconds left, former Oklahoma Sooner Tiny Gallon rebounded and the 87ers had a chance to make a game-winning 3-point shot. Solid defense was the key as Matt Bouldin missed the attempt for Delaware from outside the right wing before time expired. "Just being solid and not falling and playing our defense was key to making the stop," said Shakur, who scored nine of the team's last 13 points. Andre Roberson, who was on assignment from the Oklahoma City Thunder, had a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds. "Andre helped us big time with his rebounding and clutch points," Tulsa coach Darko Rajakovic said. "It's huge plus to have him. It's great for him to be here and play inside the same system and it's great help for us. He's a great defender and a great rebounder and he made some great plays for us tonight." Roberson will be with the 66ers for Saturday night's rematch against Delaware. Maurice Sutton added 16 points, Reggie Williams 12 and Ron Anderson and Xavier Alexander 10 each for Tulsa (11-19). The 66ers were hot early as they forced nine turnovers en route to building a 32-19 lead with 2:52 left in the first quarter. The 87ers (7-25) gradually came back. "I think we got too relaxed on defense," Shakur said. "We didn't keep the same intensity going on the defensive end. Sometimes you're going to miss shots offensively, but if we can keep the defense up, that will keep up to where we want to be in the game." Said Rajakovic, "They scored 10 points over the next two-and-a-half minutes and it was a wrecking point for us. We didn't continue with the same effort and the same energy defensively. But we were fighting through all the problems and I think we deserved to win this game." Tulsa led 37-29 through the end of the first quarter but found itself down twice before halftime. Roberson closed the first half with baseline jumper before the buzzer, giving the 66ers a 63-55 halftime lead. Tulsa found itself behind 85-82 when Michael Lee drilled a 3-pointer from the left corner for the 87ers. Shakur answered with a 3 to tie the game before the close of the third quarter. Delaware never led again but tied it at 91-91 on a basket from Arnett Moultrie with 9:02 remaining. Tulsa scored the next two baskets and clinged to small leads up until the last shot.
