Regular Season Round 65: Rio Grande VV - Austin T. 119-105

The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (23-8) topped the Austin Toros (11-18) 119-105 tonight at State Farm Arena. The Vipers won both games of this back-to-back series. On Friday Feb. 7, RGV won 109-92. Seven Vipers reached double figures, and four players scored a double-double. Houston Rockets assignee Robert Covington scored a double-double 34 points, 12 rebounds. Troy Daniels added 16 points. Dario Hunt scored a double-double 12 points, 11 rebounds. Kevin Parrom also added 12 points. Gary Talton scored a double-double 10 points, 12 assists. Tim Ohlbrecht and Kenny Kadji each added 10 points. Tony Bishop, Jr. also added 9 points, 13 rebounds. Flip Murray led the Toros with 24 points, followed by Jonathan Simmons with 20 points. Courtney Fells contributed 13 points. Josh Howard and Charlie Westbrook each added 11 points, and Myck Kabongo scored 10 points. Bishop started the game with a layup to give the Vipers the first basket of the game. Howard responded with a jump shot to tie the game at 2 points. Ohlbrecht followed with a layup and a shot from behind the arc to put RGV up 7-2. Then, Simmons connected on a three-point shot that sent the Toros on a 15-3 run to take a 17-10 advantage with 6:51 left in the first quarter. Kadji responded with two shots at the line and a jump shot to help the Vipers close in on Austin. Two free throws from Talton tied the game at 21 points with 1:48 on the clock. At the end of the first quarter, the Toros led 26-23. Both teams traded the lead throughout the start of the second quarter. Covington sank a three-pointer that gave the Vipers a 42-41 advantage with 4:49 remaining in the first half. RGV remained in the lead throughout the rest of the game. Covington scored 22 of his 34 points in the second quarter. At halftime, RGV led Austin 61-48. A layup from Ohlbrecht gave the Vipers their largest lead of the third quarter 71-53 with 7:46 on the clock. Later in the third, Fells connected on a jump shot that closed the Toros’ deficit to 9 points, 75-66. At the end of the quarter, the Vipers held a 90-74 advantage.
