Regular Season Round 39: The Island S. - London L. 101-111
Date: February 22, 2014
A Storm that drove in from the east couldn’t put a damper on another big night for fans of the London Lightning. With 7,000 in attendance at Budweiser Gardens on Saturday (Feb. 22), the Lightning lit the scoreboard into triple digits with a 111-101 win over the Island Storm. The last meeting of these two teams on Jan. 11 in Charlottetown also saw big numbers go up on the scoreboard and once again, neither team failed to disappoint in this contest. Playing even through the first quarter and with a slim 45-43 at the half, London wouldn’t really start pulling away from their Island adversaries until the third quarter. Garrett Williamson was again the spark plug firing the Lightning offence, leading the way with 28 points including a couple of hang-from-the-rim dunks in the second half. A pair of three-pointers from guard Stephen McDowell helped him to 23 on the night while the ever-steady Elvin Mims counted for 18 of London’s 111-point tally. ‘It was a great game for us — especially heading for the playoffs,” said London captain Tim Ellis. Admitting that his team has had its ups and downs this season, Ellis said that the team is gelling again after falling out of sync for a bit. “Everyone was out there having fun tonight.” That is something that has coach Micheal Ray Richardson feeling good. “We are coming together at the right time. We are playing great defence, we are passing the ball and it is fun to watch.” Knowing his club has had its challenges over the season, especially with a number of changes to the roster over the last few months, Richardson said the players are just now getting comfortable with each other, “Guys are believing in themselves and believing in their teammates and that’s the key.” London has one game remaining on its regular season schedule next Friday (Feb. 28) on the road against the Bramton A’s. That is the same team they will meet in the opening round of the playoffs and Ellis said his team can’t let up up and take the last one easy, they need to finish strong. ‘We gotta go at them, … we have to make a statement, especially on their court.” And while regular season statistics may not favour London’s chances of repeating as National Basketball League of Canada champions for the third time in a row, the Lightning coach still cautioned the pundits. He admits they may not be the dominant powerhouse squad they had been the past two years but added they don’t want to be ‘the team.’ “We want the other teams to think we are dead — but we are not dead and that’s the plan.” Courtesy of: londoncommunitynews.com
