Twelfth-ranked Valur (1-18) made lots of trouble for eleventh ranked Skallagrimur (5-14) in Borgarnes on Thursday. Skallagrimur managed to secure only two-point victory 122-120. However their fans expected easier game. Valur trailed by 13 points at halftime and as many as 15 after three quarters before a 30-15 last quarter charge cut the deficit to tie the game 96-96 at the end of regular time. But then they lost double-overtime period 12-12. Skallagrimur forced 21 Valur turnovers. Strangely Valur outrebounded Skallagrimur 49-35 including 17 on the offensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 28 assists. Valur was plagued by 24 personal fouls down the stretch. American point guard Benjamin Smith (178-87, college: Jacksonville) fired a double-double by scoring 46 points (!!!), 5 rebounds, 15 assists and 8 steals for the winners. The former international swingman Pall Axel Vilbergsson (197-78) chipped in 23 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals. American forward Chris Woods (195-89, college: Pfeiffer) produced a double-double by scoring 51 points (!!!), 24 rebounds and 6 assists and center Birgir Petursson (205-86) added 30 points and 14 rebounds (on 11-of-12 shooting from the field) respectively for lost side. Five Skallagrimur and four Valur players scored in double figures. Valur's coach Agust Bjorgvinsson rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Skallagrimur moved-up to tenth place. Valur lost twelfth consecutive game. Newly promoted team stay dead last with 18 lost games. Skallagrimur will face league's leader KR in Reykjavik in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Valur will play at home against Stjarnan (#9) and hope to win that game.
