Regular Season Round 21: Leipzig - Speyer 79-77
Date: March 1, 2014
Very predictable result when third ranked USC Leipzig (12-9) edged at home 11th ranked Speyer (7-14) 79-77 on Saturday. However just two-point win is not that big difference and the fans of host team counted on more convincing victory. The hosts trailed by 5 points after three quarters before their 27-20 charge, which allowed them to win the game. USC Leipzig forced 19 Speyer turnovers. Speyer was plagued by 24 personal fouls down the stretch. It was a good game for naturalized American forward Eric Vierneisel (201-85, college: California) who led his team to a victory with 19 points. Guard Andre Spalke (190-82) contributed with 18 points for the winners. Vierneisel attended previously one of camps at Eurobasket Summer League on his way to pro basketball. Guard Kevin Luyeye (190-91) answered with 15 points and 8 rebounds and American forward Marcus Smallwood (200-82, college: N.Illinois) added 13 points and 10 rebounds in the effort for Speyer. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. USC Leipzig maintains third place in Group South with 12-9 record having just three points less than leader Schwelm, which they share with Fraport SKY II. Speyer lost sixth consecutive game. Newly promoted team keeps the eleventh position with 14 games lost. USC Leipzig will face Weissenhorn Youngstars (#10) at home in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Speyer will play against the league's second-placed Dresden and hope to win that game.
