Regular Season Round 119: Indiana P. - Utah Jazz 94-91

Date: March 2, 2014
David West scored 25 points and Paul George added 12 as the Indiana Pacers beat the Utah Jazz 94-41 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse on Sunday night for their fifth straight win. Former Brownsburg High and Butler star Gordon Hayward nearly sent the game into overtime for the Jazz, but his 3-point attempt from the left wing bounced off the back rim as time expired. It wasn't an easy victory for the Pacers (46-13), who were playing on a second consecutive night after a 102-97 victory at Boston on Saturday. They trailed by as many as 12 points in the first half and center Roy Hibbert got in early foul trouble and finished with just two points in 19 minutes. But backup Ian Mahinmi gave Indiana a boost by scoring nine points and adding seven rebounds in Hibbert's absence. C.J. Watson had 13 points and Indiana improved its NBA-best record to 28-3. West, however, came up bigger than anyone. He was 11-for-16 from the field and his strong early performance kept the Jazz (21-38) from breaking the game open. Utah cut the Pacers' lead to 90-88 with seven seconds left when Hayward hit a jumper off an inbounds pass. Indiana's Evan Turner was fouled and hit the ensuing two free throws, but Hayward hit a 3-pointer after a timeout to cut the deficit to 92-91 with 4.6 seconds remaining. Lance Stephenson followed up with two free throws and then broke up the ensuing inbounds pass. The Jazz had no timeouts left with 2.8 seconds left, but they were able to get the ball to the red-hot Hayward, who missed the potential game-winning shot. Hayward finished 8-for-15 from the field with 21 points, three rebounds and three assists. The first half was marked by spurts from both teams as Utah jumped to a 13-4 lead before the Pacers rallied to take a 21-20 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Jazz reserves dominated the Pacers backups to start the second quarter and Dionte Garrett's 3-pointer gave them a 40-28 lead with 5:37 left in the first half. But Pacers coach Frank Vogel inserted the Pacers entire starting lineup and Utah did not have a field goal for the rest of the half. David West's tip-in with 1:55 left briefly gave the Pacers a 42-41 lead, but the Jazz rallied to take a 46-45 lead at the break. Indiana played its second consecutive game without starting point guard George Hill (shoulder) and Hibbert picked up two early fouls, forcing Vogel to shake up his rotations. Ian Mahinmi played more than 11 minutes in place of Hibbert and scored six points and blocked two shots. Third-string point guard Donald Sloan got additional playing time to give C.J. Watson a break. But after the Jazz again dominated the early part of the third quarter, the Pacers again responded. C.J Watson hit a 3-pointer from the left corner to cap a 16-3 run and give Indiana a 63-58 lead with 4:06 left. George drove hard to the basket and was fouled by Evans, causing him to land flat on his back and quieting the sellout crowd of 18,165 briefly. But after a 20-second timeout, he recovered and hit two free throws to give the Pacers a 71-66 lead with 1:41 left in the quarter. Courtesy of: indystar.com
