Regular Season Round 23: Anadolu Efes - Mersin 77-71
Date: March 24, 2014
There was no surprise in Istanbul where 14th ranked Mersin (6-17) was defeated by third ranked Anadolu Efes (17-6) 77-71. However just six-point win is not that big difference and the fans of host team counted on more convincing victory. It looked good early as Mersin took an 3-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then Anadolu Efes had a 23-12 second period charge getting the lead and Mersin was not able to take back game control losing it eventually 71-77. It was an exceptional evening for Croatian-Bosnian guard Zoran Planinic (198-82, agency: XL Basketball Agency) who led the winners and scored 16 points. Serbian-Montenegrin power forward Milko Bjelica (205-84, agency: Beo Basket) accounted for 11 points for the winning side. American-Lebanese swingman Antwain Barbour (196-82, college: Kentucky, agency: Three Eye Sports) came up with 24 points and 7 rebounds and FYR Macedonian center Predrag Samardziski (215-86, agency: Beo Basket) added 10 points and 11 rebounds respectively for Mersin in the defeat. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. The victory was the third consecutive win for Anadolu Efes. They maintain third place with 17-6 record having five points less than leader Banvit BK. Mersin lost their sixth game in a row. They keep the fourteenth position with 17 games lost. Anadolu Efes' next round opponent will be Royal Hali (#9) in Gaziantep which should be theoretically an easy game. Mersin will play at home against Besiktas (#7) and hope to win that game.
