Regular Season Round 158: Brooklyn N. - Atlanta H. 88-93

Date: April 11, 2014
The Nets did the Knicks no favors Friday night. The Nets did themselves no favors, either. Their 15-game home winning streak ended as the Nets fell to the Atlanta Hawks, 93-88, at Barclays Center. The result moved the Hawks a step closer to making the playoffs and the Knicks a step closer to elimination. The Knicks’ victory over the Raptors in Toronto kept the Hawks from clinching the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. However, the Knicks’ so-called tragic number is down to one. One more loss, or one more Atlanta victory, will put the Hawks in the playoffs. Atlanta hosts the Miami Heat on Saturday night. “It’s a big game tomorrow for a lot of reasons,” Hawks guard Kyle Korver said. “I’m sure we’ll get up for it. We just want to keep on playing good basketball.” This was not a case of the Nets’ focusing on the Knicks’ situation, the Hawks’ situation or anyone else’s. The Nets are walking a fine line, trying to stay sharp for the playoffs but also trying to rest players who are nursing injuries. Their starting point guard, Deron Williams, did not play (right patellar tendinitis), nor did guard Shaun Livingston (sprained toe). Jorge Gutierrez (11 points, 4 assists) played a solid game in his first career start, and Kevin Garnett had 10 rebounds in 18 minutes, but the Nets (43-36) were hurt by poor free-throw shooting, making only 14 of 25 attempts. “We’re trying to win every game,” said Paul Pierce, who became the 18th player in N.B.A. history to surpass 25,000 career points. “We really kicked ourselves tonight. A lot of these playoff games are going to come down to the free throws; there’s going to be a lot of close games.” He added: “I missed four free throws tonight. Very uncharacteristic. We’ve got to be better. We’re not playing for the moment; we’re playing for the playoffs.” The Hawks (36-43) may not be in the playoffs long, but barring a collapse, they will be playing longer than the Knicks. Paul Millsap (27 points, 10 rebounds), Jeff Teague (22 points) and DeMarre Carroll (12 points, 11 rebounds) led Atlanta. Mason Plumlee (17 points) and Marcus Thornton (14 points) led the Nets, but Pierce (13 points, 5-for-14 shooting) struggled. The Nets played well during the first 15 minutes, but Atlanta took control of the game, despite shooting only 1 for 19 from 3-point range. The Hawks attacked the basket and played solid defense. It was a victory that typified a Hawks season that has been better than many expected. “Jeff was able to get in the paint and score, and Paul just has a way of carrying us,” Hawks Coach Mike Budenholzer said of Teague and Millsap. “Our defense allowed us to win a game when we only made one 3-point shot.” The final four minutes of this game went back and forth. With the scored tied at 81-81, the Hawks went on a 6-0 run. But Joe Johnson answered with a 3-pointer off a pretty behind-the-back pass from Pierce. Then Pierce hit one of two free-throw attempts with 3 minutes 30 seconds left, closing the gap to 87-85 for the Nets. After Korver missed a 3-point attempt, the Nets took the lead. Gutierrez found Plumlee cutting to the basket, and Plumlee made a layup while being fouled. Plumlee added the free throw to give the Nets an 88-87 lead with 2:22 left, but Millsap’s reverse layup put Atlanta ahead again, 89-88. With 1:46 left, Teague was initially called for an offensive foul, but the call was changed to a blocking foul after a video review. Teague made both free throws to put the Hawks ahead, 91-88. Pierce was fouled on a drive, but he missed both free-throw attempts with 1:31 to go. The Nets still trailed by 3 points when they called a timeout with 47.4 seconds to play. But Johnson missed an eight-footer in the lane, and Teague followed with a floater in the lane that put Atlanta ahead, 93-88, with 19.3 seconds to play. The Nets’ home-court success was about to end. Asked about the 15-game home winning streak, Johnson said, “We need to start another one for a month and a half.” Courtesy of: nytimes.com
