Maccabi Haifa overcame visiting Ironi Nes-Ziona in the opener. The game was mostly controlled by Maccabi Haifa. Ironi Nes-Ziona managed to win third quarter 19-15. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Maccabi Haifa dominated down low during the game scoring 54 of its points in the paint compared to Ironi Nes-Ziona's 32. They outrebounded Ironi Nes-Ziona 39-28 including a 31-18 advantage in defensive rebounds. American-Venezuelan Donta Smith (200-83, college: SE Illinois JC) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 25 points, 10 rebounds and 9 assists for the winners and American Terrence Roderick (196-88, college: UAB, agency: Interperformances) chipped in 11 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. At the losing side American forward Diamon Simpson (201-87, college: St.Mary's, CA) responded with 10 points and 9 rebounds and the former international point guard Meir Tapiro (192-75, agency: Avi Zilberman) scored 15 points. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games.
