Toshiba went on a strong rally in the second half to upset hosting Wakayama in the first game of the NBL Finals. Wakayama T. was tied after three quarters but could not keep up in the last quarter eventually losing the game. Toshiba Thunders forced 72 Wakayama T. turnovers and outrebounded them 63-50 including 26 on the offensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Toshiba Thunders made 17 blocks. 81 personal fouls committed by Wakayama T. helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. American forward Nick Fazekas (211-85, college: Nevada) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 17 points, 19 rebounds and 6 assists for the winners and international swingman Naoto Tsuji (185-89) chipped in 21 points. At the losing side the former international guard Takuya Kawamura (193-86) responded with 20 points and 5 assists and American forward Michael Parker (202-81, college: Evergreen St.) scored 13 points and 7 rebounds. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games.
