Dominican Republic got to the winning start of their U18 FIBA Americas tournament campaign. They topped Puerto Rico in the opener in Colorado Springs. Jhery Matos netted 15 points in the victory. Dominican Republic claimed an 18:16 lead after the first quarter. Puerto Rico erased the deficit in the second term and jumped to a 36:35 halftime lead. Dominican Republic regained control in the third term. They ensured a 56:50 advantage at the final intermission. Puerto Rico dropped 22 points in the fourth quarter but stopped just short of victory. Yerri Flores delivered 13 points, while Oliver Francisco and Jhonatan Araujo had 11 points each for Dominican Republic. Ivan Gandia answered with 19 points for Puerto Rico. Leandro Allende chipped in 13 points in the loss.
