Uruguay claimed the opening victory at the U18 FIBA Americas Championship. They defeated Mexico for 1-2 record in Group B. Facundo Grolla netted 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the charge. Mexico fell at 0-3 record after the defeat. Uruguay set the tone early in the encounter. They accumulated a 26:6 lead after ten minutes. Mexico picked up the tempo in the second quarter. They erupted for 26 points and cut the deficit at 15-point mark at the interval 32:47. Uruguay stiffened defensively in the third term. They held their opponents to just 11 points in the quarter and opened a 23-point lead at the final break. Uruguay never looked back and cruised to the victory in the fourth term. Octavio Medina had 15 points, while Juan Galletto chipped in 13 points in the win. Alvaro Mendoza answered with 17 points for Mexico. Cesar Molina tossed in 11 points in the defeat.
