Regular Season Round 4: Houston R. - Boston C. 104-90
Date: November 1, 2014
The Houston Rockets never trailed and led by as many as 26 in a 104-90 win over the Boston Celtics Saturday night in their home opener at Toyota Center. James Harden scored 26 points to lead all scorers, adding eight rebounds and four assists. Terrence Jones tallied a double-double with 25 points and 10 boards. The Rockets victory matches last season’s 3-0 start, their first with the tandem of Dwight Howard and James Harden. Howard, who finished with 14 points and eight rebounds, injured his right knee in collision in the first half. Howard played through the pain but left the game in the 4th quarter and went to the locker room for treatment. Howard said the swelling bothered him throughout the game. Howard was not definitive on if the injury will keep him out of action. “This hurts pretty bad, but like I said we he have a good training staff and they do a good job, so hopefully it’s nothing serious,” Howard said. “Hopefully I’ll be healed up in a couple days and I’ll be able to play. The Rockets were without starting point guard Patrick Beverley who was out with a hamstring injury. Second year guard Isaiah Canaan started in his place with veteran Jason Terry also asked to help pick up the slack. The Rockets never let the Celtics in the game. They scored the game’s first six points and jumped out to a 14-4 lead to start the game. Terry’s three with 29 seconds remaining in the period gave Houston a 19 point advantage. Scoring was hard to come by for the Celtics, who shot just 38 percent from the field. Even worse was their shooting from behind the arc as the Celtics missed their first 21 shots from three and finished 1/25 overall. “I think we were aggressive early on and that kind of took them out of their offense,” Trevor Ariza said. We did what we work on in practice everyday.” The Rockets let the Celtics back in the game a bit in the third quarter. A tip-in by Jared Sullinger with 5:07 left in the period capped off a 15-4 run and pulled the Celtics within 11 at 64-53. The Celtics wouldn’t get any closer as the Rockets held Boston off in the 4th quarter with a 12-2 run, capped off by a Terrence Jones three to push the lead up to 26. The Rockets outscored the Celtics 28-23 in the quarter. “I thought (Rockets) played really aggressive out of the gate. Probably, more aggressive than we did on both ends of the court,” Celtics head coach Brad Stevens said. “We made a little run in the the third quarter and really played even the rest of the game, but they put us on our heels and we’re not going to withstand spurts like that.” The Rockets will head back on the road for a back-to-back beginning with Philadelphia on Monday.
