Regular Season Round 8: Brooklyn N. - Minnesota T. 91-98

Date: November 5, 2014
Most of his teammates had already headed for the showers. But as the door to the Nets’ locker room swung open Wednesday night, Brook Lopez still sat at his locker. He sighed deeply. He stared off at nothing in particular. More than 10 minutes after the final buzzer, he slowly rose from his chair. It was the look of a beaten man. And on this night, it fit. “It’s tough,” Lopez said after a shower. “I’m very disappointed in myself.” The Nets made a flurry of late mistakes — including two dreadful fouls in the final minutes — and the Timberwolves capitalized, getting a 98-91 win at Barclays Center. Joe Johnson led Brooklyn (2-2) with 22 points. He scored 11 in the fourth quarter, giving the Nets a 91-89 lead with about 90 seconds remaining. But with 48 seconds left and the score tied at 91, Lopez made two errors that spelled the beginning of the end. First, he allowed Wolves (2-2) center Nikola Pekovic to get deep position inside. Pekovic scored and was fouled by Lopez. The result was a three-point play that gave Minnesota a 94-91 lead. Pekovic finished with 16 points. “They went inside to the big boy and he won the battle,” Nets coach Lionel Hollins said of Pekovic. “The guy whipped him. I mean, it happens. You’ve got to give Pekovic credit. He was a man in there and I’m always saying there’s always a badder man than you in the prison. … Pek won tonight.” Still, even after that mistake there was plenty of time for the Nets to get back in the game. But thanks to Lopez, they never got the chance. On the next possession, Lopez committed an offensive foul on an inbounds after a timeout. Minnesota scored immediately — Thaddeus Young hit a floater over Lopez — to put the game out of reach. “It’s a dumb foul, you know?” Lopez said. “We had an opportunity and killed it. It’s on me.” Lopez was a little hard on himself, considering this is only his second game of the season — and of the last 10 months. He missed the final three games of the preseason with a sprained right foot, and the final five months of last season after breaking his foot. Lopez said he wasn’t tired. But he looked like it at the end — and that’s understandable. But his teammates were cutting him more slack than he did. “Let me say something, it’s not a one-on-one game,” Garnett said. “The onus is on all of us.” And Garnett has a point. He shot only 1-of-7 for two points. And for all of Johnson’s fourth-quarter heroics, he made a key turnover down the stretch. And Deron Williams, who scored 19 points, struggled in the fourth quarter. The Nets did themselves no favors early on, falling behind 17-2. But they dug themselves out of that hole quickly, taking a lead midway through the second quarter. The Timberwolves’ offense was basically inept from that point on — the bright spots were 26 points from Kevin Martin, and Andrew Wiggins, who scored a career high 17. It was the Nets’ mistakes that kept the Wolves in the game. After committing only eight turnovers in each of the last two games, the Nets had eight in the third quarter. Courtesy of: northjersey.com
