Regular Season Round 22: Cleveland C. - San Antonio S. 90-92

Date: November 19, 2014
It was an ending LeBron James will probably never forget. He lost the handle on his dribble while trying to go behind his back and turned the ball over with 1.9 seconds remaining. It led to the Cavaliers’ 92-90 heartbreaking loss to the defending NBA champion San Antonio Spurs on Nov. 19 at Quicken Loans Arena. The Cavaliers (5-5) have lost 10 in a row to the Spurs, including their last five meetings at The Q. They had a chance to tie it or win it after Spurs guard Manu Ginobili split two free throws with 9.1 seconds remaining. James was double-teamed by Ginobili and forward/center Tim Duncan in the backcourt and committed his fifth turnover on the night. Duncan was credited with the steal. “I just lost it,” James said. “I went off T.D.’s foot. It’s just how the ball rolls sometimes. I’m not too upset about it.” It was 48 minutes of hand-to-hand combat. The teams battled, clawed and played some ugly basketball before the sold-out crowd and national-television audience. Some say it was a preview of the NBA Finals in June. If so, expect more of the physical play. The game was tied seven times and featured 18 lead changes. “I don’t think one game gives you a true measuring of anything at this stage,” Cavaliers coach David Blatt said. “You’re playing one of the top teams in the last decade. “At the end of the day, you want to win the game.” James didn’t impact the game as much with his scoring as he did with his playmaking. He finished with 15 points, but just four in the second half. He shot 6 of 17 from the field. The All-Star forward dished out a game-high nine assists and added six rebounds. “This is a game I’m happy about,” James said. “I’m not happy about the loss. I hate to lose. I’m happy about the progress.” In the Cavaliers’ five victories, he’s averaged 33 points. However, in the five losses, he’s scoring 19 points a game. “I’m glad LeBron’s on our side every day,” Blatt said. “He was engaged. I don’t care what the numbers say.” Cavaliers center Anderson Varejao recorded his first double-double of the season. He finished with a season-high 23 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks. However, it was his crucial turnover with 34.9 seconds left he’ll probably remember most. He tried to throw a lob over Kawhi Leonard to James that was picked off. Guard Kyrie Irving amassed his fifth consecutive game of 20 or more points. He added four rebounds and two assists. He’s averaged 23.8 points in that five-game span. The media have been harping on the Cavaliers’ meager defensive effort in the early going of the season. Irving, one of the main culprits, took it upon himself to lock onto Spurs six-time All-Star Tony Parker. He outscored him, 20-8. Parker, a four-time NBA champion, was just 2 of 7 from the field. “I thought Kyrie played the best defensive game he’s played all season,” Blatt said. “He got after it against one of the greatest guards in the last decade. He took the challenge. He did a terrific job.” Irving wasn’t the only defensive stalwart. “Honestly, I thought we defended very well tonight,” Blatt said. “We gave ourselves a chance to win because of that.” The Cavaliers ran out of time outs and didn’t have one at their disposal on the last possession. “We needed to make the time out calls that we did,” Blatt said. “Did I wish we had one? Yeah. We took time outs with a purpose.” The Cavaliers had an 11-point lead in the second quarter, but it went up in smoke. The Spurs scored the last eight points in the first half to crawl back to 47-44 at the intermission. Both James and Irving were off the court by the end of the quarter. Blatt has been peppered in the media about the mounting minutes of the Big Three. That might have led to his odd group of players to end the third quarter that included rookies Joe Harris and Will Cherry, Shawn Marion, Tristan Thompson and Dion Waiters. Who exactly is going to score from that group, other than Waiters? The Spurs took a 72-69 lead after three quarters. “We had a few lineups that weren’t our normal lineups, and we paid the price,” Blatt said. Duncan and Boris Diaw each had 19 points for the Spurs (7-4). All-Star forward Kevin Love said the Cavaliers want to emulate the Spurs. “They are where we want to be,” he said. “They have great continuity. When they are clicking on all cylinders, you have to play almost a perfect game to beat them.” Courtesy of: news-herald.com
