Regular Season Round 25: New York K. - Philadelph.76 91-83

Date: November 22, 2014
It was New Jersey night at Madison Square Garden. On this night, that meant the Princeton Tigertones singing the anthem, a high school coach from the Hun School honored for his work and the Fat Darrell sandwich from the Rutgers grease trucks was for sale at the concession stands. And it also meant that the NBA sent the Philadelphia 76ers up the Turnpike, the Knicks’ turn to expose the ugliest roster in the league. The 19,812 fans in attendance couldn’t seem to muster the venom to boo the undermanned Sixers and barely murmured in support of the home team during the 91-83 win. The Knicks led by as many as 21 points and seemed to be coasting to the finish, Carmelo Anthony relaxing on the bench in the fourth quarter. But the Knicks played the usual lackadaisical defense and the Sixers, like a fan plucked from the crowd to shoot for a prize, hit a handful of three-pointers, closing the gap to nine. Anthony was back up and in, and after the Sixers cut it to seven, Anthony answered with two straight buckets, helping secure a much-needed win with 25 points. Amar’e Stoudemire contributed 16 points and 11 rebounds. Jose Calderon made his regular-season debut for the Knicks, but struggled through an out-of-sync three-point, three-assist performance in 21 minutes. The Sixers’ comeback efforts were keyed by four three-pointers by Robert Covington, which Anthony admitted was at least in a small part due to the fact he had no idea who he was. “I knew most of them,” Anthony said. “The kid Covington came in at the end and I’m looking at the sideline and I’m like, ‘Is he a shooter? How should we guard him?’ They’re like, ‘Just put a hand up.’ He came out and hit four threes in a row. I think with rosters like that, you’ve got to just go with your gut and just play your defense and go with your schemes. Just energy and effort. “I would like to consider myself a student of the game and know the personnel I go up against every night. So you see guys that are on the roster and they sub in the game and you try to figure it out on the fly. It can be tough sometimes.” The Sixers might be less recognizable and even less lovable than the Washington Generals, the hapless foils for the Harlem Globetrotters, and maybe have as little chance of winning. This loss dropped the Sixers to 0-13 on the season, free-falling toward the 0-18 start the Nets posted in the 2009-10 season. It’s hard to imagine how the Sixers won’t reach that — and threaten the 26-straight losses they logged last season and the 9-73 mark that the 1972-73 incarnation of the franchise put up, the worst 82-game season in NBA history. And the Knicks seemed to have little care for their woeful opponent. Who could blame them, entering the game with a 3-10 record and nine losses in their past 10 games? “Well, for us it’s not like we were playing great,” Calderon said. “So it doesn’t matter if it’s Philly or any other team. We’ve just got to go out there and try to take care of our home and play as good as possible. I know it’s tough when you’re in the losing streak like that, but it was tough for us too the way we were playing. So a win is a win.” But the Sixers were, as advertised, undermanned. The Knicks led by as many as 15 in the first quarter, but struggled to shake the Sixers — and that took some doing to keep them in the game. The Sixers shot just 35.9 percent from the floor — and 2-for-12 from beyond the arc — in the first half. “I think it was an important game for us tonight,” Stoudemire said. “We really had to bring our ‘A’ game in order to get this win. You can never underestimate a team in this league. Every team is capable of winning. So we knew that coming into this game.” Courtesy of: northjersey.com
