The game had a very big importance for third-ranked Zalgiris as it allowed them to take a leadership position. Zalgiris smashed bottom-ranked Mazeikiai in Kaunas 98-79. The game without a history. Zalgiris led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. Zalgiris forced 21 Mazeikiai turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. The former international power forward Darius Songaila (204-78, college: Wake Forest) scored 14 points and 7 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and point guard Lukas Lekavicius (180-94) chipped in 14 points and 4 assists during the contest. Five Zalgiris players scored in double figures. Zalgiris' coach Gintaras Krapikas used an eleven-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Forward Arvydas Gydra (207-89) responded with 23 points (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field) and the former international point guard Gediminas Maceina (188-84) scored 14 points and 4 assists. Zalgiris (11-1) have an impressive ten-game winning streak. As mentioned above they are alone now at the top position. Newly promoted Mazeikiai still closes the standings with 13 games lost. Mazeikiai will play next round against Siauliai trying to get back on the winning streak. Zalgiris will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game.
