Regular Season Round 27: Houston R. - New York K. 91-86
Date: November 24, 2014
James Harden scored 12 consecutive points down the stretch to lead the short-handed Houston Rockets to a 91-86 win over the New York Knicks on Monday night at Toyota Center. Houston, down three-fifths of its starting lineup, faced a surprisingly game challenge from the Knicks, who lost leading scorer Carmelo Anthony to back spasms at halftime. Even without Anthony, New York surged to a six-point lead in the fourth quarter before Harden carried Houston to victory with a game-high 36 points. Harden added six rebounds, six assists and three steals to his stat line, one that included a career-high-tying seven 3-pointers. Forward Donatas Motiejunas chipped in 13 points and eight boards for Houston (11-3). Despite missing the second half, Anthony paced the Knicks with 14 points. In fact, Anthony was the lone Knick to score in double figures. Guard Jose Calderon paired nine points with five assists, while forward Amar'e Stoudemire and guards Shane Larkin, Pablo Prigioni and J.R. Smith scored eight each. The Knicks (4-11) turned the loss of Anthony into a galvanizing event. They continued their 7-0 run that closed the second quarter by opening the third with an 8-3 spurt. New York secured a 54-54 tie when Larkin buried an 18-foot jumper off a screen. That was merely the beginning of a stretch of offense that resulted in the Knicks shooting 9-for-18 in the third quarter while recording seven assists. Six New York players accounted for the nine field goals, with Stoudemire sinking a baseline shot with 27.5 seconds left that pulled the Knicks even entering the fourth. Houston shot 50 percent (7-for-14) in the third quarter as well, but the Rockets' eight turnovers in the period helped enable the Knicks' rally. The Rockets were guilty of just six turnovers in the first half, and their customary 3-point barrage set the foundation for their 51-39 lead with 1:06 left in the second quarter. Harden scored 14 of his points prior to the intermission and sank three of the Rockets' seven 3-pointers, but with Anthony keeping pace with 14 first-half points, the Knicks didn't need much more than a modest surge to slice the deficit to five at the break.
