Regular Season Round 7: Macae - Palmeiras 77-72

Macae can celebrate finally their first win this season after five consecutive loses. The victory is especially important as they defeated much higher ranked Palmeiras (3-3) 77-72 on Tuesday. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 24-17. But Palmeiras won second period 19-17. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Macae made 20-of-22 free shots (90.9 percent) during the game. It was a great evening for center Atilio de Mello (203-82) who led his team to a victory scoring 19 points. Trinidad and Tobago-American point guard Ian Young (191-81, college: Auburn) helped adding 19 points and 5 rebounds. At the losing side American power forward Steven Toyloy (203-87, college: Cincinnati) responded with 17 points and 8 rebounds (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field) and the former international swingman Diego Pinheiro (195-80) produced a double-double by scoring 10 points and 10 rebounds. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Macae (1-5) left bottom position moving up to fifteenth place, which they share with Rio Claro. Loser Palmeiras dropped to the tenth position with three games lost. They share it with Uberlandia. Macae will meet at home higher ranked Pinheiros (#9) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Palmeiras will play against Flamengo in Rio de Janeiro and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
