Regular Season Round 38: Brooklyn N. - Cleveland C. 88-110
Date: December 8, 2014
Between protesters, a visit from the royal couple and a number of NBA players taking a stand on social issues, the Cavaliers capped an explosive night at Barclays Center with a 110-88 victory against the Brooklyn Nets. Basketball, however, hardly felt like the priority. Police swarmed the arena more than three hours before tip-off in preparation for both protesters and the arrival of Prince William and Princess Kate, who wanted to watch LeBron James as part of their three-day trip to the United States. But their arrival coincided with a demonstration in front of the arena over 34-year-old Eric Garner, who was placed in a chokehold by New York police and died last summer on Staten Island. A grand jury elected not to indict the officer last week, prompting outrage and protests across the city. Kyrie Irving and LeBron James joined the protest Monday by wearing black "I CAN'T BREATHE" T-shirts during pre-game warm-ups. James has been outspoken on social issues for the last few years and particularly this season. But Irving has remained relatively silent until now. "Condolences go out to the families," Irving said. "That's the most important thing. Things happen within the world that you can't control, but for me standing up and kind of taking it as my own and being part of something bigger than myself." James had 18 points and seven assists and Kevin Love had 19 points and 14 rebounds for the Cavs, who took advantage of the short-handed Nets. The game was close for the first 30 minutes, but the Cavs outscored the Nets 24-6 over the final 6 1/2 minutes of the third quarter to take a commanding 85-67 lead entering the fourth. The Nets were without guard Joe Johnson (virus) and center Brook Lopez (back). Without their starting center, the Nets were helpless to stop a Cavs airborne attack that included a pair of highlight-worthy lob passes from James to Tristan Thompson for dunks. Lopez's absence crippled the Nets in rebounding. Anderson Varejao had 14 rebounds and Tristan Thompson had 12 for the Cavs, who have won seven straight for the first time since the 2009-10 season -- James' final year in Cleveland before departing for the Miami Heat. The Cavs' bench, which hasn't provided much support most of the season, continued trending in the right direction. Dion Waiters had a season-high 26 points in his finest game of the season and Thompson had 14 points to go with his 12 rebounds. The Cavs bench outscored the Nets 57-42, although those figures were inflated by garbage time minutes in the fourth quarter. The Cavs began a grueling stretch of four games in five nights with Monday's victory, and three of the four are on the road. No one played more than James' 34 minutes in the win and Irving played just 28 minutes. Those two began the night second and third in minutes played, although Monday's return of Matthew Dellavedova should help lighten the load on Irving. He had seven points and five assists in a rare night he struggled shooting (2-for-10), but on this night, he wasn't needed. The Cavs return home Tuesday to host the Toronto Raptors, who they'll face for the second time in five days. Then they're back on the road for games at the Oklahoma City Thunder and the New Orleans Hornets. Courtesy of: arcamax.com
