Regular Season Round 40: Charlotte H. - Boston C. 96-87
Date: December 10, 2014
Center Al Jefferson scored 11 of his team-high 23 points in the fourth quarter to help the Charlotte Hornets hold off the Boston Celtics 96-87 at Time Warner Cable Arena Wednesday. The victory improved the Hornets to 6-15. They won back-to-back games for the first time since victories over the Miami Heat and Atlanta Hawks in early November. Jefferson exploited a mismatch with Celtics center Tyler Zeller to constantly post up late. Jefferson also gathered in 14 rebounds. Point guard Kemba Walker added 18 points, seven assists and five rebounds. The Celtics (7-13) got a triple-double from point guard Rajon Rondo (12 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds). Jeff Green and Marcus Thornton scored 16 points each. The Hornets opened a 58-53 lead in the first six minutes of the second half. They shot 6-of-10 from the field in that span with Gerald Henderson and Lance Stephenson each getting to the rim for multiple layups. It got a little testy during that stretch with Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo guarding Stephenson. Those two were called for double-technical fouls on a play that ended with Jefferson taking two free throws. The brush-up with Rondo must have revved Stephenson's motor. He scored nine points in the third quarter on 4-of-7 shooting. Jefferson scored eight third-quarter points and added five rebounds in the period. After building as much as a 10-point lead, the Hornets led 73-66 entering the fourth quarter. The Hornets trailed at halftime 45-40 after leading in the first half by as many as eight points. The Hornets played terrific defense in the first quarter, holding the Celtics to 16 points on 7-of-21 shooting. However, the offense bogged down in the second quarter, generating 18 points on 7-of-17 from the field. Neither team had a double-figure scorer at the half. Celtics center Zeller had nine points on 4-of-6 shooting. The Hornets got eight points from point guard Walker. Jefferson looked particularly sluggish in the first half scoring four points on 2-of-6 shooting (however Jefferson contributed seven rebounds). The Hornets got just 1-of-6 shooting from 3-point range at the half. The Celtics were comparably bad, shooting 2-of-11 from the arc. The Celtics had some success with pick-and-roll between Zeller and Rondo, including a Zeller layup-and-free throw in the second half that just beat the 24-second shot clock. Hornets small forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist committed the foul on Zeller. Kidd-Gilchrist played his first game in 3 1/2 weeks, having missed 12 games with a stress reaction in his right foot. He didn't start, but he provided good energy and defense off the bench. The Hornets played without rookie P.J. Hairston, who was designated inactive for the game. Coach Steve Clifford said pre-game that Hairston missed practice Tuesday with an unexcused absence. Courtesy of: sanluisobispo.com
