Regular Season Round 42: Brooklyn N. - Philadelph.76 88-70

Date: December 12, 2014
Center Mason Plumlee, getting a rare start due to an injury to Brook Lopez, scored a season-high 18 points, leading the Brooklyn Nets to an 88-70 victory over a gritty Philadelphia 76ers squad Friday night at the Barclays Center. The victory enabled the Nets (9-12) to snap a three-game losing streak, while the hapless Sixers, who had won two of their last four after losing the first 17 games of the season, dropped to 2-20. The Nets pulled away in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, going on a 10-0 run to start the period, to earn the victory, but it didn't come easy. Besides Plumlee, who also grabbed a season-high 10 rebounds, the Nets received 12 points each from forward Joe Johnson and guard Alan Anderson. Guard Sergey Karasev, also getting a rare start, added 11 points. Forward Kevin Garnett grabbed 12 rebounds and guard Deron Williams had 10 assists, but just three points. The Sixers got 20 points from forward Robert Covington and 14 points from guard Michael Carter-Williams, who also had six rebounds and nine assists. Center Henry Sims added 14 points and guard Tony Wroten had 12 in vain. The Sixers had the better of the play in the early going, leading by as many as six (12-6), before Plumlee started dominating down low, collecting rebound after rebound and scoring at will. Plumlee scored six straight points at one stretch as the Nets drew even at 16-16. Guard Bojan Bogdanovic's 3-pointer gave the Nets their first lead at 19-16 with 2:31 remaining in the first quarter. Anderson made a conventional three-point play to give the Nets a 22-16 lead with 2:04 left. The Nets held a 22-18 advantage after the first period. Forward Cory Jefferson hit a baseline jumper to push the lead to 28-18, capping a 16-2 run for Brooklyn. But Covington's third 3-pointer of the first half brought the Sixers back to within 30-29 with seven minutes left before the break. Covington's fourth trey of the half again brought the Sixers to within a point, at 37-36, with 3:30 left. Plumlee's layup with 1:20 left gave him 10 points for the half and a 44-41 Nets lead. But Sims' power move gave the Sixers a 45-44 lead with 24 seconds left. The Sixers held that lead into the break. Plumlee continued his assault on the basket in the third quarter, throwing down two dunks to give the Nets a 52-48 lead with 6:59 left in the period. Carter-Williams made a monstrous two-handed dunk that tied the game at 56-56, but then Anderson drained a 3-pointer for the Nets to give Brooklyn a 59-56 lead with 2:34 left. Anderson hit a lane jumper that gave the Nets a 63-58 lead with 28 seconds left in the third. Brooklyn led, 63-60, heading into the fourth quarter. The Nets then scored the game's next 10 points to put the game away. Courtesy of: mcall.com
