Regular Season Round 43: Houston R. - Denver N. 108-96
Date: December 13, 2014
It didn't take long for eight-time All-Star Dwight Howard to recapture his form. Despite not playing since Nov. 17, Houston's star center led the way with a game-high 26 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks, helping lift the Rockets (18-5) to a 108-96 win over the visiting Nuggets (10-13). Howard also had plenty of help, of course. NBA scoring leader James Harden notched his third career triple-double with 24 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds, while third-year forward Donatas Motiejunas added a career-high 25 points. The Rockets are now 10-1 this season in games started by both Harden and Howard. Ty Lawson led the Nuggets with 19 points and 12 assists in the loss, giving him 12 double-doubles on the young season. Despite the final score, the win didn't come easily for the Rockets. Playing their third game in four nights against a well-rested Nuggets group that hadn't played since Wednesday, the Rockets were lethargic in the early going and found themselves with a 37-24 deficit midway through the second quarter. But Motiejunas sparked Houston from there, scoring nine consecutive points and helping the Rockets close the second quarter on a 30-11 run. The Rockets pushed their lead into double figures early in the second half and were never seriously threatened again. It was the first double-digit win for Houston since Nov. 29 in Milwaukee. With rotation players including Howard, Terrence Jones, Francisco Garcia, Isaiah Canaan and Kostas Papanikolaou all missing multiple games in December, the short-handed Rockets had to scrape by in recent wins over Sacramento, Phoenix and Minnesota. But with Howard back, the Rockets looked much more like the dominant team that opened the 2014-15 season with nine wins in his first 10 starts. With Howard on the floor, the Nuggets were reluctant to double team Motiejunas on the low block, and the Lithuanian responded by scoring in double figures for a career-best seventh consecutive game. Motiejunas even drilled a pair of three-pointers, representing only the second game this season that he's connected on more than one shot from behind the arc. Courtesy of: lindyssports.com
