Regular Season Round 52: Houston R. - Portland TB 110-95
Date: December 22, 2014
James Harden poured in 44 points in a whirling dervish performance to carry the Houston Rockets to a 110-95 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday night at Toyota Center. Harden added seven assists and five steals to help the Rockets (20-7) snap a modest two-game home losing skid. He had 31 points by the intermission, capping his fabulous first half with a buzzer-beating driving layup that pushed the Rockets to a 76-56 halftime cushion. Rockets center Dwight Howard added a double-double (16 points, 13 rebounds) while swingman Corey Brewer made his Houston debut memorable, sparking the decisive second-quarter run en route to 12 points, four rebounds, four assists and five steals in 22 minutes off the bench. Brewer was acquired in a trade from the Minnesota Timberwolves last week. The Trail Blazers (22-7) had their five-game winning streak snapped. Portland guard Damian Lillard scored a team-high 18 points as the Trail Blazers struggled to keep pace without All-Star forward LaMarcus Aldridge (illness) and center Robin Lopez (right hand fracture). With the Trail Blazers clinging to a 25-21 lead, Harden scored 13 points over the final 2:06 of the first quarter, igniting that run with the first of his two first-half three-point plays. But Portland withstood that early salvo, trailing by just four -- 37-33 -- entering the second quarter. The Rockets began to pull away with a 14-3 run that extended their lead to 57-45, with Harden contributing his second four-point play of the game. Following a putback by Portland center Chris Kaman, Houston added a 6-0 spurt that included another Harden three-point play before ending the half with a Brewer 3-pointer and the Harden buzzer beater. Harden added 11 points in the third quarter to help Houston maintain its 20-point lead entering the fourth. He missed his final shot attempt, a 3-pointer late in the final period that would have allowed him to eclipse his career high of 46 points. Courtesy of: kspr.com
