Regular Season Round 56: Chicago B. - N.Orleans P. 107-100

Date: December 27, 2014
It wasn't like any other game on the schedule for Anthony Davis on Saturday night. He was back in his hometown, where he learned to play the game and emerged as an unheralded player at Perspectives Charter School to become a star at Kentucky and eventual No. 1 overall pick in the NBA Draft by New Orleans in 2012. Finally, nothing stood in his way from playing in front of his family and friends like the previous two seasons when untimely injuries forced him to miss his homecoming. Still, the Bulls prevented Davis from enjoying a win at the United Center. Behind Jimmy Butler's game-high 33 points the Bulls handed the Pelicans a 107-100 loss. The Pelicans (15-15) came determined to carryover their execution and effort that led to Friday night's big 97-90 victory against the defending champion San Antonio Spurs. But the Bulls were set on extending their season-best winning streak to six games. Davis did all he could, taking advantage of his mid-range shooting and defensive skills. The Bulls targeted Davis by alternating forward Pau Gasol and center Joakim Noah to defend him, but he scored 29 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Shooting guard Tyreke Evans had 26 and point guard Jrue Holiday had 19. Davis was appeared a little rattled early, missing seven of his first 10 shots. But he got rolling with a 10-point second quarter spurt and continue to attack the Bulls' with his mid-range scoring ability. Davis heard cheers when he was introduced and had about 100 family and friends scattered around the various seating sections at the United Center. Despite Davis' emergence, the Bulls took advantage of their superior rebounding edge to extend possessions with second-chance points. The Pelicans were fortunate to trail by a 49-45 deficit at halftime because they had long stretches in the second quarter when their offensive execution stalled. They had possessions like center Omer Asik's missing a point-blank range layup and Holiday dribbling the ball off his foot for a turnover. Evans had 13 points after the opening 12 minutes, but went scoreless in the second quarter after missing all three attempts. Austin Rivers, who scored 13 points Friday night against the Spurs, missed his first seven shot attempts before scoring for the first time in the fourth quarter. He ended with seven points on 3-of-11 shooting. Other Ryan Anderson's 13 points, no other Pelicans' reserve scored more than seven points. The Pelicans were fortunate the Bulls' had similar offensive execution problems in the second quarter, but the Pelicans had scored only seven points 6 minutes into the quarter. The Pelicans came out after halftime and surged on a 13-8 run. A layup by Asik gave the Pelicans a 58-55 lead, but they couldn't hold it. The Bulls pulled away because of their ability to extend the Pelicans' defense and get open jump shots. They closed out the final two minutes of the third quarter on an 8-4 run to take a 80-71 lead. New Orleans made a late push in the fourth quarter to cut the Bulls' lead to 99-92, but it was far from enough. Courtesy of: nola.com
