Regular Season Round 56: Charlotte H. - Orlando M. 94-102
Date: December 27, 2014
Nikola Vucevic had 22 points and 11 rebounds, Tobias Harris scored 21 points and the Orlando Magic overcame 42 points from Kemba Walker to beat the Charlotte Hornets 102-94 on Saturday night. Walker scored a Charlotte-record 35 in the second half and finished 15 of 30 in the highest-scoring game of his career, but the Hornets could never regain the lead after falling behind by 10 at halftime. It's the seventh time in the last 10 games Walker has scored at least 20 points. He made five 3-pointers. Victor Oladipo scored 13 points, Evan Fournier had 12, and Ben Gordon and Elfrid Payton each had 11 for the Magic (12-21). The Magic have defeated the Hornets (10-21) twice in Charlotte this season. Earlier this year they erased a 23-point deficit to win. The Magic led 52-42 at halftime after outscoring the Hornets 28-18 in the paint. The Hornets struggled stopping Oladipo in the pick-and-roll late in the half. He scored easy layups on three consecutive drives in the final 2 minutes to give the Magic a boost headed into the locker room. The Hornets were sloppy with the ball early on with seven turnovers leading to 12 Magic points. Walker had 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting in the third quarter, but the Hornets weren't able to cut into Orlando's lead and trailed by 13 entering fourth quarter. Charlotte finally got the lead below double digits when Al Jefferson slipped past Vucevic in the low post and set the ball gently off the backboard to cut the lead to 94-86 with 3:17 left. But the Hornets failed to cash in on their next two possessions and Harris knocked down a 3-pointer from the left wing with 1:35 left to push the lead back to 11. Charlotte got within six with 30 seconds left, but Walker's 3-point attempt from the top of the key rattled out. Vucevic added two free throws with 22 seconds remaining to help seal the victory. Jefferson had 14 points and nine rebounds. Courtesy of: nytimes.com
