Regular Season Round 65: Brooklyn N. - Dallas M. 88-96 OT
Date: January 5, 2015
Dirk Nowitzki raised both arms skyward, then brought them down to his hips like a cowboy holstering his weapons. Nowitzki had just used his hands to put away the Nets - making history with his deft shooting touch. The Nets rallied from an 11-point deficit in the final seven minutes of the fourth quarter, but Joe Johnson - who has epitomized clutch since he arrived in Brooklyn - missed a chance to win it at the regulation buzzer. The Mavericks, and Nowitzki, made sure there wouldn't be a second chance as they pulled away for a 96-88 win in overtime. It was Dallas' sixth straight win. 'It was a great game, Nets coach Lionel Hollins said. 'We were down; next thing you know it's tied and we had a chance to win. In the final minute of overtime, the Nets still had a chance against the streaking Mavs despite playing without Deron Williams (sore left side) and Kevin Garnett (rest). Trailing by five, Brooklyn forced two Dallas misses, but couldn't corral the rebound. But the third time, Nowitzki rose up for the three-pointer that sealed the game and moved him into seventh place on the NBA's all-time scoring list. Nowitzki needed 13 points to pass Moses Malone. His final shot got him to 15. 'I'm proud of it, but proud that we got the win, Nowitzki said of the game, which was the second half of a back-to-back for both squads. 'Our legs were all tired. … So you had to grind this one out. Brook Lopez led all scorers with 22 points and had a game-high matching 13 rebounds. But he scored only four points after a red-hot first quarter, missing seven of his final nine shots. Aided by Lopez's 18 points first-quarter points and Johnson's eight points in the second quarter, the Nets led for the first 30 minutes. But in the final seconds of the third quarter, Nowitzki sparked a 16-2 run with a three-point play. With just over seven minutes left, Dallas had a commanding 78-67 lead. The Nets looked tired. They looked finished. Then somehow they went on a 15-2 run to surge back into the game. After missing 21 of their first 22 three-point attempts, Johnson nailed two consecutive long balls to tie the game at 80 with 1:42 remaining. With 26.6 seconds left, Jarrett Jack hit a floater over Monta Ellis to deliver the Nets their first lead of the fourth. But it was short-lived, as Ellis made two free throws with 10 seconds left to tie it at 82. With the game on the line, Johnson went to work. 'He is one of the best in those situations, Nets center Mason Plumlee said. 'Everybody knows we're going to him. Johnson backed in on former Net Richard Jefferson, rising up for the would-be game-winner from 18 feet just before time expired. 'It looked good; it felt good, said Johnson, who finished with 18 points. But it came up a little short, and Dallas never trailed in overtime. In his first two years in Brooklyn, Johnson had made 7-of-8 shots in clutch situations - when the Nets were tied or trailing by three or less with under 10 seconds remaining. But this year, he's missed all four of his clutch attempts. 'I wouldn't even go there, Hollins said of Johnson's recent clutch struggles, 'because without him we're not in that position. … You make some and you miss some. The thing about Joe is he's not afraid to take them. Courtesy of: northjersey.com
