Regular Season Round 69: Washington W. - Chicago B. 102-86
Date: January 9, 2015
For two months, the NBA schedule spoiled the Washington Wizards. They spent the opening third of the season rolling through the second-easiest slate in the league, posting their best start in 36 years. Contenders were sparse, tankers were frequent. Those days are over. The Chicago Bulls came to Verizon Center on Friday night, the first of six games against teams in position to make the playoffs. The Wizards, just days removed from a brutal five-game crucible against the Western Conference, started this latest test with one of their strongest performances of the season, a 102-86 win over a fellow Eastern Conference heavyweight and a budding rival. 'Every game has a huge meaning to it, Wizards forward Paul Pierce said, 'especially when playing against the teams that are front of us in the conference. Less than two weeks after the Bulls stampeded through the District to claim a victory with greater physicality, the Wizards (25-11) returned the favor in front of a capacity crowd to jump the Bulls for second place in the East. Marcin Gortat and Nene, the two pillars of the Wizards' robust front line, headlined Washington's response in a flashback to the teams' physical first-round playoff series last May. The duo, with point guard John Wall as conductor, overwhelmed Chicago's impressive front court - a unit that features Pau Gasol, Joakim Noah and Taj Gibson. While the pair combined to post 36 points and 24 rebounds, the Bulls' three-headed monster registered just 17 points on 7-for-22 shooting. 'It's probably the dream for every coach to have two big men that can dominate a game like that, said Gortat, who recorded 21 points and 13 rebounds for his 12th double-double of the season. As in the first matchup, Washington held likely all-star Jimmy Butler in check. Butler had just 10 points on 2-for-12 shooting. The difference this time was in how the Wizards handled Gasol and point guard Derrick Rose. The Wizards effectively adjusted their coverages against the two and held Gasol to 12 points on 5-for-12 shooting. Rose, who scored 25 points in the first meeting, entered the game having made just 28 of 110 shots over the last six games - the worst six-game stretch for someone with that many field goal attempts since the 1983-84 season - and needed 19 shots to score 19 points.
