NBA
Regular Season Round 74: Detroit P. - N.Orleans P. 94-105
Date: January 14, 2015
NBA rules required the New Orleans Pelicans to play out the final two quarters of basketball on Wednesday night. But for all intents and purposes, the Pelicans' work was done by halftime. Playing against a Detroit Pistons team that played with little energy and whose shooting -- early on -- was as cold as the frigid temperatures outside the Palace of Auburn Hills, the Pelicans made quick work of the Pistons on their way to a 105-94 victory. Just two days after opening their five-game Eastern Conference road trip with perhaps their worst loss of the season against the lowly Boston Celtics, the Pelicans dominated the first half, then cruised to victory. Anthony Davis scored 27 points and had 10 rebounds and four blocks to lead the Pelicans, who had four players score in double-digits. Tyreke Evans scored 18 points, Ryan Anderson 17 and Eric Gordon 12 to help pace the Pelicans. Newly acquired small forward Quincy Pondexter also contributed with solid defense and nine points on 3-of-5 shooting, helping the Pelicans (19-19) get back to .500. Although the Pistons fell to 14-25, they entered Wednesday's as one of the NBA's hottest teams. They had won nine of their previous 10 games, even knocking off the likes of Cavaliers, Kings, Spurs, Mavericks and Raptors along the way. But they hardly resembled such a team in this game. The Pelicans had a lot to do with that though. The Pelicans made 48.8 percent of the their field goals and outrebounded the Pistons 47-30. Brandon Jennings led the Pistons with 19 points and former Helen Cox standout Greg Monroe added 16 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Even without starting point guard Jrue Holiday, who sat out with an inflammation of his right ankle, the Pelicans came out and quickly established the tempo. They shot 57.5 percent from the field in the first half when four different players scored in double digits. The Pistons, meanwhile, were lethargic. They shot just 11.1 percent on their first half 3-pointers and were outrebounded 24-10. Although the Pistons eventually cut the Pelicans lead to 11 in the closing seconds, they never truly threatened the Pelicans in the second half. Courtesy of: nola.com
