Regular Season Round 76: Philadelph.76 - N.Orleans P. 96-81
Date: January 16, 2015
This season, the Pelicans have endured their share of disappointing losses, especially on the road. Yet, nothing quite compared to their pitiful performance on Friday night against the woeful Philadelphia 76ers. The Pelicans not only got outperformed, they got humiliated in an embarrassing 96-81 loss at the Wells Fargo Center. They have two of the first three games on their current five-game road trip that resumes on Sunday against the Toronto Raptors. The Pelicans (19-20) were forced to play without starting forward Anthony Davis because of a sprained left toe. And starting point guard Jrue Holiday missed his second consecutive game due to inflammation in his right ankle. But Pelicans coach Monty Williams has said since the first day of training camp that he has a no-excuse team. With that, they got bushwhacked by a 76ers team that came in with the third-worst record in the NBA at 7-31. Philadelphia also is the worst shooting team in the NBA, making only 41.1 percent of their shots from the field. And they came in averaging just 90.5 points per game, the lowest in the NBA and their 30.1 percent shooting from 3-point range also ranked last in the league. Yet, when the Pelicans pushed to cut the lead to 50-47 at halftime, the 76ers turned it up a notch and raced past the Pelicans like they were stuck in neutral and couldn't shift to the appropriate gear. The 76ers put the game out of a reach by outscoring the Pelicans 23-12 in the third quarter that led to a 73-59 lead. In the third quarter, the Pelicans made only 4-of-17 shots and turned the ball over 10 times. The 76ers started the quarter on a 14-0 run to extend their lead to 66-51. After the opening nine minutes in the quarter, the Pelicans had scored only six points. Instead of carrying over the momentum gained from Wednesday night's victory against the Detroit Pistons that ended a 0-7 streak against Eastern Conference teams on the road. The Pelicans trailed by a 18-point deficit to the 76ers with five minutes remaining in the game. New Orleans never led for the entire game. Throughout the contest, the Pelicans had dreadful execution. In the third quarter, forward Ryan Anderson, who started in place of Anthony Davis, made a nice spin move to get around Noel only to miss the layup from point-blank range. Even routine pick-and-roll plays and making free throws was a struggle for the Pelicans. There were plays like Pelicans Omer Asik missing an uncontested after having an open driving lane to the basket. The 76ers flustered the Pelicans throughout the first half, easily converting most of the shots they desired that led to a 16-point lead. Forward Luc Mbah a Moute and center Nerlens Noel especially had their way in the first quarter. They combined for 16 points with both starting the game making their first four shots. The Pelicans did, however, managed to mount a challenge in the second quarter. They took advantage of a 16-6 run at the start of the quarter to cut Philadelphia's lead to 39-38. Still, with a chance to take their first lead, Gordon missed two shots at the free-throw line. That wasn't the only bad break they had before going into halftime trailing 50-47.With a chance to cut the lead to five with 2:58 remaining, Asik had an open lane to the basket but missed an uncontested dunk. Tyreke Evans, who started his second consecutive game at point guard in place of Holiday, went scoreless in the quarter. Courtesy of: nola.com
