Regular Season Round 77: Memphis G. - Portland TB 102-98

Date: January 17, 2015
When the clock read winning time, there were bodies diving for loose balls, and bumping and grinding under the rim for rebounds. There was also clutch shot after clutch shot Saturday night in the last five minutes of the Grizzlies' 102-98 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers in sold-out FedExForum. The second- and third-best teams record-wise in the Western Conference put on a playoff-caliber performance that resulted in Memphis (29-11) extending its winning streak to four games. Portland (30-11) is mired in its first three-game losing streak this season and sits just a half-game ahead of Memphis for second place in the conference. 'I thought the fourth quarter was as close to playoff intensity as you can get to in game 40, Griz coach Dave Joerger said. Zach Randolph's 20 points and 15 rebounds led the Griz, who got 17 points apiece from recently acquired forward Jeff Green, and guards Courtney Lee and Beno Udrih. The Blazers were paced by forward LaMarcus Aldridge's 32 points and nine rebounds. Damian Lillard finished with 23 points but struggled with 9-of-26 shooting. Portland shot just 39 percent while Memphis connected at a 51-percent rate. The Griz also had a nifty midrange game going with Green and Udrih on the floor. Udrih made his second straight start in place of injured Mike Conley (right ankle sprain), and gave the Griz a 101-96 cushion with 8.7 seconds left. Lillard's 3-pointer had just cut the Grizzlies' lead to 99-96 with 27 seconds left. 'When I came off the screen, I looked at the clock and it was a low clock, Udrih said. 'I didn't want to put anybody in a bad situation so I took it. Udrih made all seven shots he took and connected on two that kept the Blazers at bay in the final minute. He hit a 20-foot shot that gave the Griz a four-point lead with 38.4 seconds remaining. 'We stayed together even though they made some tough shots, Griz center Marc Gasol said. Memphis had a 20-point third-quarter lead trimmed to 86-84 after Portland's Wesley Matthews connected on the Blazers' 11th 3-pointer. After a timeout, Lee hit a 3-pointer that extended the Grizzlies' lead to five with five minutes left. The Griz led 62-42 two minutes into the second half. The Blazers stormed back by making 3-pointers and enough stops to outscore the Griz 28-16 the rest of the period. Memphis led 78-70 entering the fourth quarter despite watching its offense go flat. The Grizzlies dictated the pace outside of the last four minutes of their 18-point third quarter. While Portland relied heavily on 3-point shooting (13 of 36), Memphis controlled the glass 50-40 and scored inside throughout the game. 'It was a physical game. There's no question about that. Memphis is a physical team, Portland coach Terry Stotts said. 'They were more physical than us in the first half. The Griz benefited from efficient performances from every player who saw time in the first half. Memphis made eight of its first nine shots and shot 61 percent over the first two quarters. Memphis picked apart the Portland defense with sharp cuts to the basket, kick-outs to open 3-point shooters and execution in pick-and-rolls. Randolph's 12 points and nine rebounds led the Griz at the intermission. Randolph became the franchise's all-time leader in rebounds, passing Pau Gasol's 4,096, when he grabbed his eighth with 3:48 remaining in the second quarter. Randolph received a standing ovation when Griz public address announcer Rick Trotter announced the milestone. 'It's a great accomplishment that I'm thankful for, Randolph said. 'I'm excited about it. I just want to keep pushing and working hard and try to do what's best for the team. The crowd roared in approval when Green entered in the first quarter. Green made his home debut after joining the Griz following a trade with the Boston Celtics earlier in the week. Green gave the fans early satisfaction by making three of his first six shots, including a pair of 3-pointers. His 3-pointer with eight minutes left in the second period ignited a 16-6 Griz run and helped establish a 17-point lead. Courtesy of: commercialappeal.com
