Regular Season Round 78: Toronto R. - N.Orleans P. 93-95
Date: January 18, 2015
On Friday night, Pelicans' Tyreke Evans struggled with seven turnovers and couldn't establish a shooting rhythm against the Philadelphia 76ers. He didn't have that problem on Sunday afternoon against the Toronto Raptors. He made a game-clinching driving shot on an isolation, clear-out play to help the Pelicans pull out a much needed 95-93 road victory at the Air Canada Centre. With a last chance, the Pelicans got the ball back after the officials ruled the ball hit off a Raptors player after a missed 3-point attempt by Eric Gordon with 22 seconds remaining. On a set play, Evans took the ball at the top of the key, penetrated and scored. The Pelicans were without forward Anthony Davis for the second-straight game because of a sore left toe injury. And point guard Jrue Holiday missed his third consecutive game because of inflammation in his right ankle. But they had backup center Alexis Ajinca, who scored a career-high 22 points. Evans finished with a game-high 26 points. In Friday's loss to the 76ers, Evans was held to eight points. Throughout the opening 28 minutes, the Pelicans kept the crowd mostly silent at the Air Canada Centre. They were rolling against the Raptors, looking nothing like the team that sputtered and lost on Friday night to the struggling Philadelphia 76ers. Then came the third quarter and the Pelicans inconsistent play took over again, but it didn't lead to a loss time. Despite holding a 16-point lead, the Pelicans were outscored 35-14 in third quarter. A DeMar DeRozan's 3-pointer cut the deficit to 56-53 with 5:48 remaining in the quarter. Former Pelicans guard Greivis Vasquez's 3-pointer tied the score at 58 and DeRozan's driving shot gave the Raptors their first lead of the game, 60-58, with four minutes remaining. The Raptors closed out the quarter with a 71-64 lead, taking advantage of the Pelicans' disastrous 5-of-16 shooting. But instead of wilting, the Pelicans fought back to steal the game from the Raptors. Courtesy of: nola.com
