Regular Season Round 79: New York K. - N.Orleans P. 99-92
Date: January 19, 2015
The Knicks took the floor at Madison Square Garden on Monday afternoon, and honestly, hopes could not have been high. They had not won a game of any kind in 38 days and hadn't won at home since Nov. 22. But somehow, as the clock was ticking down in a heated battle with a dwindling Knicks lead - wiped from 15 points to just one - the sellout crowd hadn't bolted for the exits yet. And when Jose Calderon, the most likely player on the roster to be the next one out the door, drained a three-point field goal with 32 seconds to play to secure a 99-92 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans, the fans were in full throat. 'It was good, Carmelo Anthony said. 'I know they're going through it, too. The fans are going through it. We are going through it. It gets better. I believe that. I'm going to always believe that. His faith and the faith of the fans certainly have been tested with 16 consecutive losses entering the contest and 26 in the last 27 games. And if Anthony is looking for better days, he's well aware they may not be coming for a long time. The Knicks took the floor with a starting lineup that included a pair of players on 10-day contracts, and they left a handful of their season-long contributors on the bench all game long. The focus was on auditioning the likes of Langston Galloway and Lou Amundsen - even if the latter has been in the league for nearly a decade with 10 franchises. With a season already long gone, winning officially has taken a back seat. The Pelicans didn't exactly put up a fight, sitting their star Anthony Davis as well as point guard Jrue Holiday, but the same lineup had won in Toronto a day earlier. And the Knicks have shown a dazzling array of ways to lose, a given at 6-36 for the season. 'At this point it's just a matter of giving guys the confidence that they need, Anthony said. 'It's not about me trying to go out there and win the basketball game on my own. At this point in the season, with our record, it's just a matter of putting that confidence in my guys on the team. We had guys that come in with 10-day contracts that are just playing basketball. They don't really know the system, but they're playing basketball. They're playing hard and they're bringing it every night. The game served as an exhibition for Galloway, who already was picked up for a second 10-day contract. Amundson and Lance Thomas awaited their status after the game as their 10-day deals expired. Galloway, who has become a fan favorite, contributed 21 points and a highlight reel tip dunk of a missed shot, leaping above 7-foot-2 Alexis Ajinca. 'It's big, Galloway said of the dunk. 'The crowd wants to stay in it and they want something to cheer for. When I get a chance to do something like that or anyone gets a chance to do something like that it's big for momentum and for the fans. While the Knicks' future is not built on the prospects of these end-of-the-bench players, getting a look at them in hopes of filling out the roster is now part of the Plan B for Knicks president Phil Jackson. 'We didn't really talk about how many games we had lost, coach Derek Fisher said of the postgame locker room. 'We more so talked about that we have to act as if we expected this. But we still have to get back to work and not feel so good about it." Courtesy of: northjersey.com
