Regular Season Round 83: Dallas M. - Chicago B. 98-102

Date: January 23, 2015
So much for celebrating Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle's 600th career regular-season win at home. Just one win away from becoming the 24th coach in NBA history to hit that milestone, Chicago wasn't in the giving mood. In fact, quite the opposite. Much as they did for the entire game, the Bulls snatched away another rebound in the game's final seconds. Chicago guard Derrick Rose got to a loose ball with 4.7 seconds remaining after missing a twisting layup. Rose's rebound prevented the Mavericks from getting a game-tying or game-winning shot attempt off in a 102-98 loss Friday at American Airlines Center. 'It's disappointing to make a defensive stop and then they came up with that last rebound, Mavericks guard Monta Ellis said. 'Yeah, but the game wasn't won there. Throughout the whole game, they played harder than us. We played hard in the fourth quarter in our spurts, but we've got to do better than that. Heading into what Carlisle called an 'unbelievably difficult second-half schedule, the Mavericks fell flat - never leading in the game and unable to match Chicago's defensive and rebounding prowess. The Bulls' front line of All-Star Pau Gasol, Joakim Noah and Taj Gibson help Chicago outrebound Dallas 47-30. 'We needed to be tougher, Carlisle said. 'We need to be more hit-first. The Mavericks (30-14) showed resilience in the fourth quarter, punching back after Chicago (29-16) took advantage of a lineup stretched by a lack of post depth. Dwight Powell, the big-man du jour after 10 rebounds in 20 minutes in the Mavs' previous game against Minnesota, played 21 minutes - yet didn't grab a single rebound. Carlisle used small forward Richard Jefferson to rest Dirk Nowitzki for a 90-second stretch in the fourth quarter. Using a part of that span, the Bulls' lead swelled from three points to 10 with 4:30 remaining. But Dallas chiseled away, and it looked as if Ellis' late-game heroics could potentially give the Mavericks a shot for the win. With 28.6 seconds left, Ellis offered a little head fake to Gibson, hit a jumper and was fouled. His free throw cut Chicago's lead to 100-98, with Dallas needing a defensive stop. Rose was challenged on the final play by a group of defenders, including Tyson Chandler, who finished the game with 10 points and a team-high 12 rebounds. But the ball couldn't be secured. The previously moribund Bulls completed a Texas two-stomp, following up an impressive 23-point home win over San Antonio with the road win in Dallas on back-to-back nights, the wins coming after losing six of its previous eight games. While Rose and guard Jimmy Butler got hot early on, combining for 19 first-quarter points, Carlisle's combo of Ellis and Rajon Rondo didn't have quite the effect. Rondo, considered a big player in big games, didn't even get a chance to close out the game when it mattered. Carlisle sat him for Devin Harris with 5:11 remaining in the fourth quarter and didn't call on him again, calling it a 'coach's decision. Rondo finished with six points, two rebounds and four assists. 'There are very few correct decisions when you lose games, he said. 'I've learned that after coaching over 1,000 of these. You've got to roll with your gut … and so that's what we did. We just came up short - all of us. And we all own it. Courtesy of: elkharttruth.com
