Regular Season Round 84: Memphis G. - Philadelph.76 101-83
Date: January 24, 2015
There was no fourth-quarter collapse against the Memphis Grizzlies this time. The 76ers' rematch on Saturday night was all but decided by then. The Grizzlies put the 76ers away in the second quarter en route to posting a 101-83 decision at the FedEx Forum. It was a sharp contrast to the teams' meeting on Dec. 13. Back then, the Sixers blew an 18-point, fourth-quarter advantage en route to an overtime setback at the Wells Fargo Center. It can be argued that the Grizzlies (31-12) were tired that night after winning a double-overtime home game one day earlier against the Charlotte Hornets. This time they were well rested. That was a problem for a Sixers team playing the second game of a back-to-back and its fourth game in six days. So, as expected, the Sixers (8-36) never really had a chance in what became their fifth straight loss. Memphis started to separate itself from the Sixers early in the second quarter before building a 24-point cushion (60-36) with 59.5 seconds left before intermission. 'Memphis was Memphis in the second period, Sixers coach Brett Brown said. 'You know, the margin was established, and they retained it. The Sixers were never in the game after that. And it could have been worse. Ten Grizzlies played at least 18 minutes. Jeff Green and Marc Gasol were the only Memphis starters to see action in the fourth quarter, and even those two played limited minutes. That didn't stop Green from finishing with a game-high 18 points on 6-for-11 shooting. The swingman was acquired in a three-team trade with the Boston Celtics on Jan. 12. Memphis power forward Zach Randolph added 17 points on 8-for-11 shooting and a game-high 14 rebounds. It was his 24th double-double of the season. Reserve guard Vince Carter added 13 points and six rebounds two days before his 38th birthday. Backup forward Jerami Grant paced the Sixers with 16 points. Point guard Michael Carter-Williams added 10 points and six assists to go with five turnovers. 'Memphis is good like that, Brown said of the Grizzlies' forcing 24 turnovers. 'They are men. They are physical. They are always in a crowd, and I give them a lot of credit. The Sixers were without Tony Wroten, who will have surgery to repair a partial tear in the anterior cruciate ligament of his right knee. The Sixers won't fill the backup point-guard position immediately. 'Some of that is because of Larry's performance, Brown said of the solid play of reserve point guard Larry Drew II. Sunday marks the final day of Drew's 10-day contract. The team will re-sign him Monday. He was averaging 3.8 points and 4.4 assists in his five games heading into the Grizzlies matchup. Brown also wants to use what would have been Wroten's minutes to help develop players. 'You've heard me say less is more at times, the coach said. 'For me right now, we most definitely miss Tony. He's our leading scorer [16.9 points per game]. It still provides more minutes for people like Jerami [Grant], K.J. [McDaniels], and Robert [Covington]. 'So there is a silver lining. We are going to look at it that way. Courtesy of: lancasteronline.com
