Regular Season Round 99: Memphis G. - Atlanta H. 94-88

Date: February 8, 2015
Grizzlies point guard Mike Conley gives the Atlanta Hawks credit for being versatile enough to effectively handle any style of basketball. 'They've beaten everybody, Conley said. But the Hawks, owners of the NBA's best record, didn't have enough heart, grit or grind Sunday night. The Griz had an extra supply of all of those ingredients and that was evident late in the fourth quarter of their 94-88 victory in FedExForum before a sellout crowd of 18,119. Memphis (38-13) wore down the Eastern Conference-leading Hawks, who won a shootout two nights ago against the West-leading Golden State Warriors. This, however, wasn't a run-and-gun, free-flowing game. The Griz imposed their will and rugged brand of ball in the final three minutes to pull away for their 13th win in the past 15 outings. 'Both teams put their imprint on the game at one point, Conley said. 'And we did what we do. We keep it close and try to outwork you at the end. There were 19 lead changes and seven ties. Atlanta (42-10) shot 12 of 30 from 3-point range. But after a Mike Scott basket from beyond the arc tied the score at 86, the Hawks' offense faltered against the Grizzlies' defensive pressure. The Hawks turned the ball over twice and missed five consecutive shots after reserve swingman Tony Allen put the Griz ahead 88-86, on a tip-in basket that followed a missed layup by Zach Randolph. 'It was a playoff-intensity game - very physical and I thought executing at the end of the game both offensively and defensively was huge, Griz coach Dave Joerger said. 'The physicality of the game wore (the Hawks) down a little bit. Allen's spirited defense, hustle and four offensive rebounds had plenty to do with lifting the Griz. On one sequence, Allen flew toward the basket and ripped an offensive rebound away from Atlanta's Scott and Kyle Korver. Allen landed with the basketball and immediately fired a pass to Kosta Koufos for an uncontested slam. The play was part of Memphis' 11-2 run that put the Griz ahead 82-75 with eight minutes left. With the game in the balance, the Griz got to more loose balls, forced turnovers and harassed the Hawks into tough shots. 'That's all heart, grit and grind right there, Allen said. Allen finished with nine points, five rebounds, a block and seemingly countless disruptive moments. 'Tony has a big impact on the game every night, Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer said. 'He's a great competitor, he gets his hands on loose balls, he can really be physical and he got to the offensive boards. It's the game. He's got a positive impact for them. The Griz took a 69-66 lead into the fourth quarter. Conley found Koufos alone for an alley-oop dunk as the buzzer sounded to end the third period. The lob dunk was a pretty connection in an otherwise ugly affair. Just prior to Koufos' quarter-closing basket, Atlanta's Al Horford was called for an offensive foul after he set a pick for point guard Dennis Schroder and delivered a bone-crushing hockey check on Griz backup guard Beno Udrih. On the same play, Schroder dribbled five additional feet only to get hit with a clothesline from Griz center Marc Gasol. 'We are a physical team. We just came up with enough stops and enough baskets to win the game, Gasol said. "We finished possessions with rebounds which was huge for us. Even though the game wasn't perfect it was good enough to win. Referee Jason Phillips warned both coaches about excessive complaining in the second half. Joerger and Budenholzer appeared to lobby for foul calls on every possession. Players on both teams were animated in their disapproval over calls all game. The Griz were more poised in the latter stages. 'I thought we did a nice job of not complaining on and on and on, Joerger said. 'We just played. Things get emotional, you say something, but for us I kept telling our guys, ‘Hurry up and run back.' If you have a reaction, they push it up and have four guys who all stop at the 3-point line, even if it's not your guy, we have to get back and find guys. Neither team shot well. The Hawks, who clung to a 43-42 halftime lead, finished shooting 41 percent. The Griz made up for 39 percent shooting by taking care of the hustle areas. They won the battle on the boards, 55-37, which included 17 offensive rebounds for 22 second-chance points. Memphis also scored 18 points off 14 Atlanta turnovers. 'I give them credit. They are a very good defensive team, Horford said. 'This was a battle. Courtesy of: commercialappeal.com
