Regular Season Round 17: Olympiacos - AEK Athens 83-77
Date: February 19, 2015
The most exciting game was a derby match between two local teams from Athens: Olympiacos (#1) and AEK Athens (#7). Despite it looked like an easy game for Olympiacos, those rules do not exist in derby games. It's more the case of honor for local supporters and such games have that special and unique approach you cannot find in other games. Guest AEK Athens challenged much higher ranked Olympiacos giving them a very tough game, but finally losing it by six points 83-77. The hosts trailed by 1 point after first quarter, but they rallied back to get the 1-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 83-77. Olympiacos made 16-of-19 free shots (84.2 percent) during the game. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. The former international Vassilis Spanoulis (193-82, agency: Beo Basket) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 21 points and 12 assists for the winners and American-Belgian guard Matt Lojeski (198-85, college: Hawaii) chipped in 9 points and 6 rebounds. British Pops Mensah-Bonsu (206-83, college: G.Washington) responded with 24 points and 7 rebounds and American swingman Malik Hairston (198-87, college: Oregon) produced a double-double by scoring 13 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Olympiacos (16-1) have an impressive series of sixteen victories in a row. They maintain first place. Newly promoted AEK Athens keeps the seventh position with nine games lost. Olympiacos are looking forward to face Aiolos Trikallon (#11) on the road in the next round and are hoping to win another game. AEK Athens will play against Panelefsiniakos (#12) and is hoping to prove to their supporters that this time they can win.
