Regular Season Round 109: N.Orleans P. - Brooklyn N. 102-96

Date: February 25, 2015
The Nets arrived at Smoothie King Center on Wednesday night facing more than just a basketball game at a strangely named arena. This was a test, marking the Nets' first real challenge since switching to a small-ball style of play after the All-Star break. And while the style of play is different, the frustration remains. The Pelicans beat the Nets, 102-96, abruptly ending Brooklyn's two game-winning streak. New Orleans (30-27) was without three key players because of injury: Anthony Davis (shoulder), Ryan Anderson (knee) and Jrue Holiday (leg). But unlike the slumping Lakers and the Nuggets - whom the Nets pounded in their first two games playing small - the Pelicans are still a dangerous team, as proven by their short-handed win over Toronto earlier this week. And they were still too much for the Nets (23-32). 'We played well, just not well enough, Nets coach Lionel Hollins said. 'It was good test for us to go out there and play against a good team and see how we have to raise our level up even more than what we've been doing. Quincy Pondexter led the Pelicans with 25 points. Joe Johnson led the Nets with 21 points and 10 rebounds. The Nets were within striking distance heading into the fourth quarter, but they couldn't get the stops they needed from there. With 2:30 remaining, the Pelicans led, 97-87, before a late rally gave the Nets a chance. With about a minute remaining, Jarrett Jack tried an off-balance three-pointer that would have cut the lead to two. 'I rushed it, Jack said. 'Tried to let it fly, tried to get us back in a one-possession ballgame. It came up a little short. That one's been replaying in my mind. And despite strong efforts from Thaddeus Young and rookie Markel Brown, the Nets were out of luck. Young finished with 19 points in only his third game with the Nets. Young came to Brooklyn in a trade for Kevin Garnett a week ago today; Garnett never scored more than 18 points in a Nets uniform. Brown made his second start, playing about 200 miles from his hometown of Alexandria, La. He scored eight points and dazzled his cheering section of about 70 friends and relatives with a 360 dunk in the first quarter. But in the end, frustration won the day for the Nets. There were hopes that finally, with a new style, this team was starting to put it together. And Wednesday's game provided the perfect opportunity to prove it. Instead, the Nets walked off the court looking bewildered. They're still, somehow, in the eighth and final playoff spot in the East. But they still don't have a winning streak of longer than three games this season. And with tough games looming at Houston and Dallas, it might be a while before the Nets get another chance to build a streak. 'That's what separates the really good teams from the middle of the pack, said point guard Deron Williams, who had 10 points on 4-of-14 shooting. 'That's kind of what we are right now, the middle of the pack. We want to make that step to a good team. Hopefully we get there. Courtesy of: northjersey.com
