Regular Season Round 116: Houston R. - Memphis G. 100-102
Date: March 4, 2015
Marc Gasol drove toward the baseline, stopped, elevated and connected on a shot from 10 feet with 0.1 seconds left and the Grizzlies left Toyota Center with a 102-100 victory over the Houston Rockets Wednesday night in Toyota Center. Gasol's game-winner capped a 21-point performance in an important Western Conference matchup. Memphis entered the game with just a 1 -game lead over Houston in the standings. The Rockets had a chance to grab a lead with the game tied at 100 and the final seconds ticking away. Griz guard Courtney Lee poked the ball away from James Harden on his drive to the basket and the Griz forced a turnover with 5.4 seconds remaining. The score seesawed in the final two minutes after the Griz blew a double-digit lead. Corey Brewer's 3-point with two minutes left cut the Grizzlies' lead to 98-96. And then Tony Allen was called for an offensive foul when he collided with Brewer on a drive to the basket. Harden then tied the score at 98 with a pull-up jump shot near the foul line. Harden's basket hit the reset button on the game with 1:27 left in the fourth. The score was tied at 79 when the final frame began. Memphis used its size in the second half to create a cushion. The Griz scored almost exclusively at the basket to start the final period with Zach Randolph leading the charge. Memphis opened the fourth on a 10-0 run and never relinquished the lead. The Griz missed several good looks at the rim in the first half, going 11 of 27 in the paint. Gasol and Randolph remedied those interior problems by combining to score the Grizzlies' first 17 points in the third quarter. Seemingly, the Griz got bored by pummeling the Rockets inside and began launching jump shots. Houston took advantage by racing toward easy baskets and transition 3-pointers. It was an important win for the Griz. The Griz had lost three of four, and played Tuesday without three key players. Randolph and Beno Udrih returned from an illness. Allen was back in the rotation after serving a one-game suspension for violating team policy. Courtesy of: commercialappeal.com
