Regular Season Round 118: Brooklyn N. - Phoenix Suns 100-108 OT

Date: March 6, 2015
It was all right there for the Nets. They were in position for a bounce-back win, poised to prove their recent run of good basketball was not a fluke. And then it all came crashing down. 'I mean, it was like deja vu for us, guard Deron Williams said. 'We had control of the game and just didn't put it away. The Nets fell to the Suns 108-100 in overtime on Friday night, blowing a 15-point lead in the final 5:45 of regulation. 'We just couldn't execute, Nets coach Lionel Hollins said. 'We turned the ball over. We had a lot of easy shots that we didn't make. … We had a lot of opportunities. But the Nets, incredibly, couldn't cash in on any of them - including a would-be game-winning jumper from Jarrett Jack at the regulation buzzer. With 5:45 remaining in regulation, the game seemed over. The Nets led 91-76. The arena was rocking. Victory felt certain after rookie Cory Jefferson sparked the Nets with his first career double-double; Jefferson finished with 12 points and 13 rebounds, all in the second half. But from then on, the only shots the Nets (25-35) could hit down the stretch were the ones aimed at their own feet. The Nets didn't make a single field goal in the final 5:45 of regulation. They went 0-for-7 with four turnovers and were outscored 16-1. Still, against all odds, they had a chance to win the game. And then things got even weirder. With the score tied at 92, and 11.3 seconds left, all that separated the Nets from victory was a basket. And yet the team's two best scorers - Joe Johnson and Brook Lopez - watched the play from the bench. 'I was going to spread the court and we were going to run pick and roll, Hollins explained. Jarrett Jack took the ball down the court, came off a pick from Thaddeus Young and rose up for a 20-footer. Jack hit two game-winners in Brooklyn earlier this season, but this one missed as time expired. 'We got a good shot and he just missed it, Hollins said. 'Man, it's been replaying in my mind the whole time, Jack said. 'I thought it was down. When I let it go it was definitely on line. It just kind of hit the front side of the rim a little bit and rimmed out. The game went to overtime tied at 92. And the Nets had their chances there, too. With the Suns leading 102-100 with 1:17 remaining in overtime, Deron Williams rose up for an open three-pointer. The Suns scored on the next possession, and the Nets last chance to win had passed. Remarkably, after taking that 15-point lead with 5:45 left in the fourth quarter, the Nets were outscored 32-9 at the end of regulation and overtime. After his final, decisive, missed three-pointer, Williams ran back down the court shaking his head - the perfect summation of his night. He finished with nine points and nine assists, but shot 2-of-16, including 1-of-5 from three-point range. He was not alone. As a team, the Nets struggled mightily with their shot going 35.1 percent for the game, including 21-of-55 from in the paint. 'We just couldn't score, Williams said. 'There was a big part of the game when we were missing layups and tipping and pretty much everything around the basket. The Suns struggled, too, shooting only 42.9 percent and missing their first 21 three-pointers. But they made three three-pointers in the fourth quarter and overtime. With the loss, the Nets fell only a game and half out of the final playoff spot in the East. But this game was further evidence that they can't take care of business when they most need to. The Nets had been playing better since the All-Star break, but now they've had two consecutive debilitating losses on their home court: a blowout to fellow playoff contender Charlotte on Wednesday, and this heartbreaker to Phoenix. Brooklyn still doesn't have a winning streak of longer than three games. 'We want to make the playoffs, Hollins said. 'But you have to beat teams on your home court and you have to close out games on your home court and you've got to do positive things consistently before you can be a playoff team. 'And we haven't been consistent yet, all year long, Hollins continued. 'We've been hanging around, but we haven't been able to close games when we've needed to. Courtesy of: northjersey.com
