Regular Season Round 119: Cleveland C. - Phoenix Suns 89-79

Date: March 7, 2015
A 32-point second half lead by the Cleveland Cavaliers was not enough to keep things from getting interesting in the fourth quarter. And the back-end of a grueling stretch of basketball may be partially to blame. The Phoenix Suns made Cleveland sweat a bit in the final period, but the Cavs finally outlasted the Western Conference foe on Saturday night at Quicken Loans Arena, 89-79. Cleveland was outscored 27-9 in the fourth, however, the Cavaliers' early edge was too much for the Suns to overcome. 'We had the game in hand, coach David Blatt said. 'It got a little messy in the fourth quarter, but that's our fourth game in five nights and our eighth game in 13 days. I think we got tired. I certainly think we got tired and got a little worn out. Timofey Mozgov led the Cavs with 19 points and four rebounds, LeBron James added 17 points, eight rebounds and six assists, and Tristan Thompson contributed 15 points and 12 rebounds off the bench for Cleveland. The Suns, who were without center Alex Len, were paced by 16 points from Markieff Morris and 11 points by P.J. Tucker. Cleveland led by as many as 32 in the third, outscoring Phoenix 27-15 in the quarter. James scored 11 points in the frame, extending his streak of consecutive games with a double-digit scoring output to 626. James, in the third, also registered his eighth assist of the game. His 4,206th assist as a member of the Cavaliers tied Mark Price for the most in franchise history. But Phoenix kept things close enough to force Blatt's starters back into the game, closing the gap to as few as 10 points before Cleveland ultimately put the game away. 'We've got to do a better job of closing out games, James said, 'just to continue to build our habit and continue to build things that we need to do to keep getting better long-term. Mozgov, despite leading the team in points and giving Cleveland an advantage around the basket, did not play during the fourth quarter. 'I really wanted to get [Kendrick Perkins] some minutes, and that was a reason for that, Blatt said. 'Timo played an outstanding game for us, both ends of the court. He's a really good player. He's been one of the reasons we're 21-5 in our last 26 games. The Cavs' defense was the story in the second quarter, holding Phoenix to just 13 points in the period and leading 53-37 at halftime. Thompson was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field in the first half for Cleveland, scoring 11 points and grabbing six rebounds. Blatt also saw an opportunity, with the team playing their fourth game in five nights, to get some rest for All-Star guard Kyrie Irving. Irving, who finished the game with eight points in 25 minutes, sat out the entire second quarter. 'Sometimes, it's just about the flow of the game and what's going on out there, Irving said. 'That group had a great flow. They were getting stops. I was just on the bench, being happy for those guys. That type of rhythm doesn't come often in a game, especially against a good team like that, we were getting stops, and offensively, we were clicking. James was held scoreless in the opening period, but the Cavs held a 30-24 lead at the end of one. Kevin Love drained three 3-pointers to pace the Cavaliers with nine first quarter points.
