Regular Season Round 122: Dallas M. - Cleveland C. 94-127

Date: March 10, 2015
To illustrate just how far the Cavs have come in a relatively short amount of time, just look at the box score from the last time the Cavs played the Dallas Mavericks. Mike Miller and Matthew Dellavedova started the game, while just three bench players active that day (Joe Harris, James Jones and Brendan Haywood) were active for Tuesday's rematch at American Airlines Center. The Cavaliers hammered the Mavericks Tuesday 127-94 after losing to them by 19 in early January at Quicken Loans Arena. That was the day General Manager David Griffin insisted before the game reports questioning David Blatt's job security were false. Blatt is indeed still here, but the team he directed Tuesday looked far different two months later. LeBron James, sans headband, scored 27 points Tuesday while becoming the franchise leader in assists, J.R. Smith scored 21 points and Kyrie Irving had 22. The Cavs ended a five-game losing skid against the Mavericks and won their first game in this building since 2008 while handing the Mavericks their worst loss of the season. Kevin Love had 21 points and 14 rebounds and Timofey Mozgov scored 17 points for the Cavs, who have enjoyed relatively easy victories in four of their last five games leading into Thursday's national television showdown at the San Antonio Spurs. James, admittedly still haunted by his Finals loss to this team four years ago, at least replaced one difficult memory with one a little better. He recorded his first assist of the game in the second quarter, passing Mark Price to become the franchise's all-time leader. He ended the night with eight assists and now has 4,214 for his career. James is now the franchise leader in points, assists, field goals made and attempted, career scoring average and free throws made and attempted, among others. And he did it while starting the game without his trademark headband for perhaps the first time in his career. James said earlier this season he thinks about that 2011 Finals loss almost every day. The feelings are obviously stronger being back in this arena, but Mavs coach Rick Carlisle doesn't see a discernible difference in James' games against them now as opposed to before the Finals. 'I view it more that the guy is just a great competitor more than a personal vendetta against us, Carlisle said. 'Going through something like that is something that great players go through. 'Michael Jordan went through a lot of disappointments before he finally got his first championship. [Dirk] Nowitzki had the same thing here. There's probably some motivation there. The Cavs raced out to an early 20-12 lead in the first quarter, but gave it all back when James left the game for three minutes. Not to worry. The Cavs gradually built the lead back to 14 at the half and Timofey Mozgov's basket in the lane with 3:54 left in the third quarter pushed the lead out to 91-68. Chandler Parsons scored 18 points and Monta Ellis had 17 for the Mavericks, who have lost three of their last four. Courtesy of: ohio.com
