Regular Season Round 123: Oklah.City T. - LA Clippers 108-120
Date: March 11, 2015
The Clippers went snake hunting again. As they did against Portland and Golden State, the Clippers locked in on their prey. But unlike those two games, this time, the Clippers grabbed a big win, shutting down Russell Westbrook in a 120-108 victory in Oklahoma City. 'I think the key was our defense, Matt Barnes said. 'We knew that if we could slow Westbrook down - we could cut the head off the snake - that we could beat them. As they did to Lillard and Curry, the Clippers blitzed Westbrook and took him out of his comfort zone. One of the league's hottest players, Westbrook turned the ball over 10 times on a 5-for-14 shooting night. With Kevin Durant still out, the Clippers locked their sights on the Thunder point guard, forcing him into his worst game in a month, when he struggled against, wait for it, the Clippers. 'When you go into a game, you have a plan, Clippers coach Doc Rivers said. 'It's tough to stop five guys. But if you try to focus on one guy and the secondary guy, you have a chance. I think the guys have done a pretty good job of that. And while the Clippers' defense did its work, the offense smoothly hummed along. Chris Paul, who hassled Westbrook for most of the game, scored 33 points and contributed nine assists. J.J. Redick scored 25 - his fifth straight game with 18 or more points. Barnes scored 22, hitting 6-of-7 from 3-point range, and DeAndre Jordan finished with 18 to go with 17 rebounds. Even though the Thunder resorted to intentionally fouling the Clipper center in the fourth quarter, it didn't matter, with Jordan, going 12 of 22 from the line. The Clippers are 6-0 when he shoots 15 or more free throws this season. The Clippers led by 17 in the first quarter before Oklahoma City came back to tie the score in the second. But the Clippers stormed out of the locker room in the second half, running the lead back up to 22 before getting the big road win. The Clippers are now 9-5 without Blake Griffin and 2-2 with Jamal Crawford out, as role players such as Glen Davis (12 points) have stepped up. 'It's given guys an opportunity to get quality minutes and do important stuff for this team that's going to help us for the playoffs, Barnes said. 'Obviously, when Blake and Jamal get back they're going to play, but guys that aren't going to play as much then are getting time now, and it's only going to help us down the road. It's also forced the Clippers to get defensive. Without Griffin and Crawford's firepower, the team has had to focus on defense - and on stopping the head of the snake each night.
